I wrote earlier about having issues with leaving water out at night for Noah. I decided to ignore his cries to go out at 3 a.m. earlier this week and woke up to urine on my carpet. I poured nature's miracle on the stain on Monday. Today, I could still smell the urine, so I poured a LOT of nature's miracle on the spot so the carpet was completely saturated. Now it smells even worse - like a combination of alcohol, chemical, and very gross urine. When I get a whiff of it, I have to leave my room. Is there any other product out there that can take care of this odor? The stain is gone, but now I'm left with this terrible smell. I'm going to need professionals to steam the carpet, but in the mean time, any suggestions to relieve the smell?
Keep in mind that cleaning is not the only objective...the product has to contain an odor neutralizer. Even if you think it smells great, a dog can still smell it without the right kind of odor neutralizer. The major brand carpet cleaning products that are supposed to be for getting out "pet stains" have never worked well for me.
Ours is the Bissell Little Green Machine. It's the same basic idea as the Spot Bot, but it was less expensive. Some of the shampoos that you use in this "mini steamer" also have deodorizers that work really well.
By the way - a great way to deter your dog from revisiting the spot (or the room for that matter) is to treat your dog in the room.
First, put several treats around the room - in each corner and then several in the middle.
Then, hold a few training sessions in the room.
If the dog thinks that the room might again contain food, he is unlikely to sully it (it becomes like a den). We have done this in every room and do it once a month (we visit a different room each month) just to keep it up.
We have a steam cleaner that has been used and used and used...... Haven't needed it much for our goldendoodle but our shep mix got in the horrible habit of sneaking downstairs (finished basement) and relieving herself in an unused area of the room. Often we wouldn't know about it until several days later and by then the berber carpet reeked! What seemed to work best is to add vinegar in the water in the steam cleaner. This helped a lot. I also have a product called OdoBan (I think) that I bought at Sam's Club. It does a pretty good job neutralizing the urine smell but the smell of the product itself can be annoying (it dissipates within a couple hours). We lost our shep, Dixie, in Oct. Miss her but not her nasty habit!
I've had better luck with Simple Solutions. I did have a couple of spots where nothing was working, so friend recommended Urine-Off. Some vets sell it, I could only find it online. It worked great!!
