I shouldn't have tried clipping Charli while she was squirming ut I thought I had her foot in a tight hold. Well, I didn't. I cut her quick and she is bleeding. Tried pressure and septic stick. Slowed down but hasn't stopped. I have her boot bandaged up and in my sock. What else can I do? How long does it take to stop? Do I have to worry about infection?

Thanks!!

I use corn starch and pressure. could take 10 minutes or longer. Is your dog clear of vWd?
What is vwd?
von Willebrand's disease. It's a genetic blood-clotting disorder.
MY sister has this... not severe though
I assume a blood test would be needed? Never had her tested. Since she is a puppy mill pup I have no family genetic history. Is this something that is normally tested for or only if there might be a problem?
I found that I nipped 2 nails - 1 on each foot. The other foot stopped pretty quickly.
Just something to know in case of a bleed. If they are vWd you would need to rush to a vet ASAP after a cut. might be worth knowing if you plan to do this often, LOL
It's one of the diseases good breeders routinely test for.
You could also try holding her so her paw is higher than her heart. You can hold her on her back with her leg raised. Don't let her go for a good 10 minutes cause walking around will open the wound again. I've cut the quick several times and no infections or problems aside from some cleanup. I got a grooming table and as soon as I can I have to figure out a good way to restrain the dogs so i can dremel the nails by myself. It's so hard with the hair, the restraining , quicks etc.
The dremel tool works really well for trimming the toenails, but before we used that my husband would clip with a doggie clippers. Since frequently he would get a bleeder, he would heat up a soldering iron and have it handy when he clipped the toes. Then when he would get a bleeder, he would cauterize it. Didn't seem to bother the dogs at all, and it definitely stops the bleeding. If you have one around, you might heat it up. You may not have to use it, but it may come in handy. Don't think bandages and socks are a very good idea as the blood may stick to them and dry. Then you have another problem - getting them off.
In fact the dremel supposedly acts like a cautery if you get to close to the quick with it and you do have to be careful because it can make the nail quite hot which can also be painful.
I have the PediPaw - you are so right about the nail getting hot. I have been lazy and haven't used it in a long time so I thought I would trim them down with the clipper and then use the PediPaw a little at a time to get their nails to be good length.

Ops - bleeding started again. Getting out the baking soda!
Bleeding stopped!! THANK YOU so much for your quick response! (no pun intended!)
The guilt on the other hand, is not so fast to go away! If she was human she would probably have a new car sitting in the driveway even if she was too young to have a license! Such guilt!!
Baking soda - so simple - so smart! I didn't have to use it but I will remember next time - if there is a next time.
My den carpet did not fare so well. Obviously I bought this rug way before we had puppies. It used to be this clean - Oh well, it's only a rug. Off to the carpet cleaners tomorrow - which was needed anyway with icey, muddy balls being rolled over it before I noticed.
