Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Hi All! I'm new to Doodle Kisses and a soon-to-be new Doodle mommy :) Our Golden Doodle puppy is 7 weeks old, and she will be joining us on Mother's Day. We could not be more excited! Here is our story: I'm married and a stay-at-home mom to two kiddos, one with sensory processing disorder and general anxiety disorder. We have a lot of seasonal allergies, and my oldest is allergic to most dogs. In dealing with the challenges that come from SPD and GAD, we have been told for several years that my oldest would greatly benefit from having a pet. We are dog lovers, but knew it would be tricky with the dog allergy. One of our friends got a F1B GoldenDoodle at Christmas, and we were invited over to play. And guess what?! No allergic reaction!!!!!!! After doing a little research, we found they were often used for therapy dogs and were great with kids. We were in the process of moving, and I couldn't commit to a puppy then. But now that life has settled and in our new home, my oldest is finally able to get a Doodle :) We have been waiting for several weeks, and these last days are the longest days of our lives!!!!!! But we know it will be worth it. Her name will be Leia (after Princess Leia in Star Wars), and we will be training her to be a therapy dog, specifically helping other children with anxiety. I want my oldest to know others are going through the same thing, and that we can receive joy from Leia but also give joy to others.

Congratulations! What a beautiful doodle.
As you probably already know, just because you do not have an allergy to one doodle, it is possible to have an allergy to
another doodle. And I hear things can change, HOWEVER, I didn't have a dog for years due to allergies. I am so happy report that I do not have any problems either. Yogi can sleep right by my face with no reactions. It used to be that if my kids even played with a dog and it was on their clothes it would cause me to start itching and sneezing.
Good luck!!! They are wonderful pets
Yeah, we took every possible precaution. We bought from the same breeder, with the same sire and stayed with the F1B. So, we feel optimistic that this will be successful :)
Have you had the breeder bathe the pup then rub a cloth on the her for your son to sleep with? This would tell you whether he might have a reaction to this particular pup. Also, just so you know, doodles have a coat change from pup to adult that might change his allergic reactions. So, you will need to keep an eye on your son's allergies when the pup changes to his adult coat. That being said, congratulations, Leia is beautiful.
Welcome to DK! Your little princess is gorgeous. I hope she is everything you want and need her to be - can't wait to hear about how things progress. And of course, pictures are required!
She is a cutie, congratulations. Sounds like a lot of work in your future, just want you to know when the "what have I done" thoughts come on in the early weeks that in the end it is all worth it.
Leia is just beautiful! Welcome!
Congratulations! Your princess is gorgeous and you have so much to look forward to with her joining your family.
Awe Leia! What a sweet name :) F1Bs are known to shed much less than F1s. We have an F1B and he doesn't shed at all - I am super allergic to all animals (cats, rabbits, horses, dogs), but I can snuggle with my puppy and pet him without any reaction at all. I hope you have the same luck we did :) Your kids will love her - our pup is almost 7 months, met my nieces and nephews about a month ago, and was so good with them. We also had a very easy time housetraining our pup - regular accidents for about 2 weeks, and then it's like a light went off and he's been good ever since (except for a couple of times where he was obviously sick). Good luck with your new fur child! :)
Leia is adorable. I hope all is going smooth for you and your family. My boy Bentley is in training to be a Therapy Dog. What a blessing your little Leia will be to the children she helps. Certainly anxiety can be reduced by these gentle dogs.
Good Luck and keep us posted on her progress.
