I can not get anotherr dog.  I absolutley can NOT get another dog.  We are so lucky that Rocky is so amazingly sweet - whose to say we would be that lucky again??  I have a three year old who is right in Rocky's face every other minute - you know??  What other dog would possibly tolerate that??  Also - I can't afford it - there is some financial responsibility to dog ownership and I need a teaching job to add more income around here - not another dog to have groomed at 93 dollars a session!

Ok - so I have got to stop looking at Petfinder!  I need to just resolve myself that we will wait until I'm working and Gracie is a few years older to add another dog to our house.  Right?  Right.  Except there is this doodle named Harley on Petfinder that I keep looking at longingly.  Sigh... and he's the one that is near me - there are others - a puppy named Hayden in Wisconsin that has the most amazing expression on his face...  I could just love him all up!   Someone talk some sense into me please!!!  Sympathy will make me feel better too... lol.

You can either put blinders on and NEVER look, keep pondering until they are adopted, or .....

We were not looking for Ned when we got him (impulse buy when we saw a doodle on a camping trip no less).  We definitely were NOT looking for a fourth dog when we got Clancy at the shelter.  So, I am absolutely no help to you...

Well, I can help you out a little. Hayden's adopted, and even if he weren't, he's not good with small children...that was why he was rehomed in the first place. He is a real handful, and certainly not at all tolerant like Rocky is. Count your blessings. There's an old wives' tale that if your first child is an "easy" baby, your second will be the devil incarnate, and vice versa; I believe the same thing is true of dogs, lol.

You are so right about a dog being a financial responsibility; too few people understand just how big a responsibility dog ownership is, which is why all those dogs ended up on Petfinder to begin with. There will always be another who catches your heart and needs a home when the timing is better for you.

You asked for it... a second dog is twice as expensive as one, twice as much trouble, twice as dirty, twice as naughty in the puppy stage (which lasts a long time). I cannot do the calculations but that is the way it works. That being said, once we started having two (13 years ago) I have not been able to go back to having one. We have had as many as four but I've managed to get down to two. So good luck with that.My children were grown when we started to have multiple dogs though.
I agree with the expensive but to me dirty is dirty. Actually my first dog was/is a lot more of a authority questioner than the second but you never know. In some ways two are easier in terms of exercising themselves and things like that. But they are all unique so you never know....It's OK to look, I syill love to see the pups.
I do the same thing.....I'm always looking at the doodles on Petfinders, although I know we are not ready to add another doodle to our family.  It's still fun to look.
Heather, I did a discussion a while ago about getting puppy fever. Looking is the beginning....LOL......and now I have two dogs. I love my dogs dearly, but it is a lot of work, and one dog is so much easier to take with you! My daughter did not listen to her mother and just got her second dog. Her first one is the best dog ever and Karen's theory proved true regarding the second one...he is a stinker :) I will say, in my case, the second one (Vern) is a joy, so I guess I am no help either.

You are not alone, Heather!   I , too do petfinder - window shopping !! - I cannot have another dog, 1) I already have two dogs. 2) one of them is a senior and does not need new adjustment. 3) another one is in a lot of training due to her reactiveness, and I need to get her issue resolved before I can bring another dog. 4) I wont have time nor $ for training for another dog.

But, it is free to look!! I just look, read, and think about them and hope they find a fantastic forever home...........

Heather-I thought I was the only one who does this!I watched Hayden (right here in Milwaukee) in pending stage forever also. There's been a few others like the mini kabradoodle Maya?? My husband said no way-we can only have 3 pets in our city code I have 2 minis and a cat. So that stops me and a real reality check was when they went last month for the yearly shots at the vet and the bill is over $300 and the next week another $150 for Myla's teeth and then Chloe's reaction to the shots anothe $73 that's when the husband says see? You wat a third??? (yes I still do) I know someday we will. Hang in there awhile yet!! Can't you put a parental control on petfinder???LOL!
You could adopt my Petfinder mindset - I love to look at doodles on Petfinder and have resolved that if I find one in a local shelter, I'll pull him and get him with a rescue.  Also, I like to know who's out there because when people ask me about my 2 doodles, I tell them "oh, there's one who looks JUST LIKE Charlotte on Petfinder......"

Oh, I so hear you!  I have agreed with DH to wait until we retire to get a second dog, but thats five years away!  I am always looking at Petfinder and feeling all twisted up that I dont go get one of these poor guys.  I've been obsessed with Elmo, occasionally emailing his photo to DH just to pester him. lol  Well low and behold he's been adopted. :(  But there again it solves my problem, I wanted him, I wanted someone to take him before I caved!  whew.

So back to waiting and watching.

It did take Elmo a very long time to find his forever family, but I'm so glad he did, and his new family has joined us here on DK! You can see Elmo with his new siblings on her page:

Oh goodie, I can watch him!  He is a fine looking fella.  thanks for the update.
