Ok what is the diffrence between f1, f2 and so one

So i keep reading about f1, f2 and so one doodles. what is the diffence between them and how do i know what Tilly is.
Her mom was a pure white standered poodle and her dad was a pure black lab. I have her pedagree chart but am not sure were it is right know.

Tilly is a apricot doodle.

Tilly is an F1. This is also called a "first cross". F1's are dogs with one parent who is a purebred poodle, and one parent who is a purebred Golden or Labrador Retriever.

To add to Karen's correct response above...

F1b is an F1 doodle x Poodle so you get 3/4 poodle and 1/4 retriever -- the "b" always means backcross to a parent breed.

F2 can either be an F1b or it can be the result of breeding an F1 with an F1

F3 is an F2 with an F2 or an F2 with anything higher.

The generation is only advanced 1 past the lowest. So an F5 with an F2 is still an F3. But typically we just call them "multigenerational" after the F3.

LABRADOODLE GENERATIONAL GLOSSARY

To help you understand the generation and breeding terminology we have provided the following glossary and explanations. A Labradoodle is a cross between the Labrador and the Poodle (usually the Standard Poodle). In general we will call the first purebred "purebred-A", and the second "purebred-B".

F1 ( Chocolate) & F1B ( Creme) Labradoodles

F1

F1= 1st generation puppy - 50% purebred-A and 50% purebred-B - for example, a Labrador to Poodle cross, this is first generation, resulting in healthier offspring. In this particular Labradoodle cross hair type can be smooth like a Labrador, fleece/wooly like a Poodle.

F1B

F1B= backcross puppy - 25% purebred-A and 75% purebred-B. For example, an F1 Labradoodle and Poodle cross; this is Labradoodle bred back to Poodle.

F2

F2 = second generation puppy - F1 hybrid crossed with an F1 hybrid - for example, an F1 Labradoodle crossed with an F1 Labradoodle. This combination you get the same percentage of purebred-A as purebred-B as you would an F1 hybrid.

F2B

F2B= second generation backcross puppy = F1 bred to a F1b (hybrid backcross)

F3

F3= F2 hybrid to F2 hybrid

Multi-generation or Multi-gen

Multi-gen = F3 or higher generation hybrid crossed with F3 or higher generation hybrid

Regarding F2b...technically the 'b' should only refer to backcrossing ONE doodle mix to a parent breed. So I think a true F2b would be an F2 of some kind crossed to a poodle. But F1 x F1b would still be an F2 because an F1b is a form of F2.

This is interesting and has a strange correlation to a silly conversation DH and I were having 2 days ago over beverages. (we have warped humor at times)

: If DH's Mom was inbred, and DH's dad was inbred, but neither parent was related to the other parent would that make DH inbred? Or would he be a happy healthy F1?

Adina I would tend to agree with you and thanks for the link!...I have tried to get a complete handle on this from several breeders and everyone has different opinions....

Let's not forget to mention that Wheaten Terriers, Irish Water Spaniels and Cocker Spaniels were also infused into the Australian lines as well so who really knows what your getting with a Aussie multi-gens?......

Well...yeah...Australian is a complicated one I don't fully understand. And for me personally when it comes to the non ALD multigens I'm usually just interested in what the parents are ... rather than what the pup is called. But it's a fun little puzzle at times.
