At 6 am this morning we awoke to the sound of Oliver throwing up in his crate. We jumped out of bed, got him out of there and he started wretching again. He threw up 3 more times, until there was nothing but water coming up, he had gone to his bowl and took a drink, and threw that up too. He threw up on my bed, ugh, so at dawn we were stripping the bed too. Ira took him out and he had bad diarrhea, I couldn't imagine what he had eaten, I didn't see anything in the throw up that looked strange. I tried to give him some ice cubes and he wouldn't even look at them, and he loves ice cubes, so we went to the vet to be there when he opened. The vet checked him out, listened to his belly, and heard lots of gurgling and gas sounds. He had no fever and actually seemed to perk up at the vets office, of course. Well we are taking it one step at a time, he gave him a shot to calm down the stomach, and stop the vomitting and diarrhea, and told me to just try some ice in a few hrs. I brought him home, he went to sleep for a bit, then I gave him a few ice cubes that he ate. I made some cooked chicken and rice for later, but the vet said to go easy, and maybe just a little rice for now. He is not even looking for food at this point, so I am not pushing it. What a day, I was so scared when he started doing this...I worry about dehydration, so I am glad he is at least taking cubes. I just spoke with my vet, and he said to call in am to tell himhow he is doing, but go gradually with food for a few days. I can't imagine what he ate that caused this...Any advice for us???

thanks Laura, and yes it was scary to him too I think, he was scared, he has never thrown up like that before, so I guess he was scared too....He is sleeping now next to me,,,,
Poor Oliver! Get well soon!

My friend's OES is going through the same thing, it started on Monday night, massive diarrhea and vomitted several times. They rushed him to the emergency room, did blood test and took xray, everything came back negative. Spent more than $1000 that night, and still could not figure out what was the problem. He is still on boiled rice & chicken diet, and they are adding electrolyte to his water to keep him hydrated. Last evening she told me her OES has not done no. 2 since Tues. I told her, this is not unusual cos each time we treated Z/K diarrhea with medicine, they always ended up constipated for the following few days. And yes, pumpkin works for my pups every time, both for diarrhea and constipation. I usually buy the whole/half pumpkin, remove the skin and seeds, cut into bite-size pieces and steam. You can even cook enough for a few days, keep the unused portion refrigerated, and mix in 2 tablespoons to their food (no reheating needed for the cooked/steamed pumpkin).
Hi Julie, funny u should say tht your friends dog had this, I was just talking to a friend of mine that told me her dog had the same thing about 2 weeks ago. My vet is very conservative, we have used him for the past 26 yrs. He didn't want to do all the bloodwork, x-rays etc. he wanted to see if the shots worked, and he wanted me to call him by three this afternoon if he wouldn't take any ice cubes. Well he did take ice cubes, and he perked up, not his usual self, but he ate the two spoons of rice and chicken that I gave him and he wanted more, which of course I didn't do. He has been eating his ice cubes thru the day and night, and no vomitting, and he hasn't had a bowel movement again. My vet sat on the floor with him, and put his head on his stomach and listened to his stomache sounds. He pushed and prodded, and was almost 100 percent sure it was not pancratitis, or anything like a bowel obstruction. I have always called this Dr. the dog whisperer, he just has a way with animals, and he has always been right, at least for us. He takes blood, or x-rays if he feels it is necessary, but he doesn't go crazy....I am the one that goes crazy...He wants me to call him tomorrow am to report. Hopefully Oliver will be back to himself or near that...I will add the pumkin to his chicken and rice mixture tomorrow. thanks for the post...
HOLY COW! I cannot believe that the first three discussion when I came on were about sick doodles! I hope Oliver feels better real soon! How scary for you! I hope Oliver continues to perk up and hold down the food! {{{{HUGS}}}}
thanks Shelly, he is alot better this morning. I fed him some rice, ground up cooked chicken and some pumpkin and he kept that down, no problem. He wanted more, but I did not want to push it. He can have more for dinner. He seems to like the ice cubes better then water today, so I make sure he gets plenty of thenm thru the day.
Hoping Oliver is feeling much better this morning!
Ditto. Hopefully you all got some sleep, and your guy is much better this morning. Let us know.....
Yes we did, thank goodness, and he was up and ready to eat at his normal time. He is not 100 per cent, but he is much better for sure..Ate his small portion of rice, chicken and pumpkin this morning and wanted more, but I didn't give it to him. He can have more later...he is sleeping and resting comfortably today thank goodness...He seems to want ice cubes instead of his water bowl today, so I give him all he wants, he loves them...I am drained from this, lol, I just hate when these babies get sick, they can't tell us what hurts, and where, but their eyes say it all, he had such sad eyes yesterday, today is a better day thank goodness. Thanks for caring
Thanks, he is, thank goodness, and if u read the rply above think he is on the way toa full recovery. He slept thru the night, and got up pretty well this morning..Thanks for the caring
I hope Oliver is even more himself today .. it sounds like you saw a lot of improvement in one day. You're very lucky to have a vet that is so competent. You have a lucky Doodle to have such a loving owner AND a talented vet when he needs it.
I am so glad Oliver is doing much better. I think he is probably just plain ol' worn out (like you are) after this fiasco!!! I am sure his eyes are now telling you "thank you and don't worry. I'm much better and just need to rest. I love you!!!" Hugs and nose kisses to Oliver.
Thanks Nancie and I tend to belive u are right, he is just being a tired love bug today....
