It's a pretty common behavior. I've seen dogs do it on every kind of surface, including wood floors. It's an instinctive behavior; before going to sleep, dogs in the wild will dig and circle to make themselves a softer, den-like sleeping place, and that instinct is present in our domestic dogs, too. If he isn't tearing or damaging the bedding, I wouldn't worry about it or do anything to stop him.
Vern is our digger here. He digs on all of his beds. Every morning I come out to find the dog bed covers all messed up. He digs on the carpet and in our bed. Sometimes, I just remind him to stop. We also purchased a Coolaroo bed and that really helps with his digging. He doesn't sleep on it, but goes to it to roll and dig on. I have replaced the cover on that Coolaroo bed about 8 times, but at $12.00 a cover it is cheaper than new carpet or rugs. It is like a stress reliever for him. I wouldn't worry about the digging unless it gets destructive. He is just doing what dogs do and getting his bed ready to sleep in.
My guys don't sleep in our bed, but they always dig and turn around on their dog beds before laying down. As Karen said, it's instinctive.
Our dogs circle and once in a while bury themselves in our pillows, but our new guy actually strongly digs like I think Vern does. No damage yet, but I see ripped sheets in our future. I buy cheap so it doesn't matter to me.
Hershey digs on the spot she wants to sleep in. Looks and sounds funny but she dosen't do any damage. Sydney doesn't dig, he likes to use his bed as a pillow.
Our dogs do the circling, but if I have to put Elli in the crate due to behavioral issues, she will dig at the pad in the crate. I will lets Elli sleep with until she starts having her 'nightmares' like chasing squirrels I guess...then she starts moving around too much for my comfort...so one of us have to go...and it is never me! HA. I leave the crate door open for her and many times she will go in there where she feels comfortable and safe. Otherwise, we have 3 dog beds on the floor for Skadi and Elli to chose from...it's like musical beds. Skadi gets too warm when sleeping on our bed so she never sleeps with us. I think that would bug me big time having the dogs dig at the sheets for a time before they settle down...it bugs me to have my DH hog the blankets too so you see, I am not very tolerant. LOL
Annabelle does it to, but, sometimes it's just because she is cold and wants under the covers.
