It seems like our Oven is dying : (

I recently started playing with Polymer clay So I  decided to check if the temperture was accurate on our stove.  its not ...or else the Thermometor I bought is way off.

It also can take 20-25 minutes to preheat to the 'right' temp (used to take 10)

Granted-most of the stuff that I bake seems to come out ok...Hard to really say if the temperature is a factor...as so many things have a range for bake time

The temp can be 10-25 degrees below what it says on the oven.

I have no idea what to look for in brands, etc

I do know I want a Smooth top Electric -It is what I have had for the last 27 years & I like it...Yep- It is the same stove too- 27 years old!

I want self cleaning.

I dont think I want a dual oven-while I would like it to cook in.  I dont want to loose my bottom drawer for Skillet Storage...I have no other place to put them.

What about a convection oven?  I do bake & that is supposed to be a plus...?...But a Dual one would be better then a true convection- so I have the choice.

What do you have that you love about your Oven....What do you have that you hate?

What brand do you have?

Edited: I just measured our stove...it is 29 7/8 wide...That might be a problem...There is no extra room for 1/8" more I dont think

Smooth top, self cleaning over...wish I could slide the top in the oven on occasion but mostly it stays nice looking.  I see that have one now that used steam to clean the oven and it is suppose to clean much quicker...because of the cost of electricity I like that idea.

Steam, interesting

I have found a few ovens with the steam cleaning feature.  It sounds like a good idea.  Although it does not clean as well as a 'true' self cleaning oven.  it does take less time & less energy....its not for a really dirty oven...So I think one would have to get in the habit of cleaning the oven more often.

I did read that a self cleaning oven with the heat coil hidden (which i do want)  Has a bigger chance of burning things out when you use the self cleaning feature...it is also harder & more expensive to replace this hidden coil...

There are some ovens with both cleaning features...That might be a good option.   Also the 'true' self cleaning oven is more insulated for the cleaning heat.

I have not found alot of info on them yet...Id like to read more about this feature

I use my oven so little it should last a hundred years. That said it may die tomorrow : ) I have an electric GE Profile. I never use the convection oven setting though I thought I wanted one. It is self cleaning. It is about 8-9 years old and has been fine. There is nothing I love about it but I like it quite well. It fits a great big turkey for Thanksgiving. I though about a wall oven but I didn't want to give up cabinet space.

Thanks F.

I think I would probably not use the convection much either

Our Kitchen is small- so I could never give up a cabinet...Thats why I even want the storage drawer under stove.

Oh- I did read about some ovens that have the coil hidden...So easier to keep clean- that would be nice...I have not found any like that online...I may just have to open stoves at a store to see : )

I have a convection oven and use it all the time. More even cooking and it shortens the cooking time a little. The bottom elements in my oven are covered.

Gosh F.

I have been reading about Convection ovens & Im thinking I do want one now.

Here is one thread.

There are True Convection ovens (Europe design)  & Convection oftens (US)...the True ones are better

I have a double wall oven and separate cooktop, so not really the same configuration, but they are all Thermador and I really love the brand. The burners put out a ton of heat but then you can turn it down to click on a slow simmer that I use a lot. I just made a pot of sauce tonight and after simmering the sausage and meat sauce til it was cooked through, I kept it on the low setting and it keeps it hot enough without a chance of burning. Easy to clean which I had to do big time tonight!

I do use the convection in the oven. If I'm short on time and want the roast or whatever to hurry up, I use this! There's a convection roast and a convection bake, I use both depending on what I'm doing. The oven space is huge and self cleaning only takes two hours, comes out like brand new.

I've had the appliances about 4 or 5 years, so far so good.

There's so many to choose from, it's mind boggling. You should go to an appliance store for hands on, you'd get a better feel for what you like and don't like! Good luck!

There is so many choices!  I do need to go to several stores & look to see what I like.

Unfortunately we will get white...As we replaced our Fridge 5 years ago...its white as are all the rest of the appliances.  That limits some choices.  Electrolux I have not found in white- I dont think its available even.

The Convection roast sounds great.  I have already decided I will add Convection for sure.

I would add here that that is probably a plus.  The top of our smooth top is black and that is the thing I hate the most.  It always looks dusty.  (I don't cook a lot).  It drives me crazy.  Even if I just make toast it seems like somehow the crumbs end up on top of the cooktop.

I have a Maytag smooth-top, self-cleaning oven that I love.  It has the hidden bottom element and that is what I like the best!  So easy to wipe clean but it does give me a smaller bottom drawer.  I have heard that "induction stoves" are awesome - I haven't done any research as I don't need a new stove but so many people have told me that they love it so I would definitely look at that if I did need a new one.  I really want a double oven - I'm debating on that when we redo our kitchen.  I find that I have so many dinner parties and could really use the extra oven.  Right now when I have Christmas dinner, I do the turkey in the oven and a ham in the slow cooker but I still want to put mashed potatoes and bean casserole's in the oven too so I think I would really use it!  So many choices!!!  Good luck!!!

I think there are some things I would love about the induction & some I wouldnt like.

It does make 1/2 of my pans not work...It might make all of them not work- Id have to check with a magnet.

I think it would be neat if 1/2 the burners were induction & 1/2 were regular.

I think it requires a bigger Amp then we have also ( I saw some need a 60 amp- we have a 50)
