The Companion Animal Parasite Council has produced new maps to show the prevalence of certain parasites in the US. There is also a lot of information on various parasites including life cycles, diagnosis of infection, prevention and treatment.  Here is a link:

My state is still in the low incidence section for heartworm and the specific area in WA state is sort of 'unknown' according to the map but other maps have always shown basically -0- incidence and vets in the area concur. We were in Alberta, Canada last week and as gorgeous as it is the mosquitoes make us happy we don't live there every time we visit.  That and the freezing winters.

This is a very informative site and it seems that San Diego County is a relatively safe place as fare as parasites are concerned.  Thanks F.

Thanks, F.  I really appreciated the information.  I don't know what a couple of the critters are but will find out so I don't continue to be so ignorant.

There are some weird ones I never heard of.
