I am sure this topic has been brought up many times before but I figured I would bring it up again...LOL

I was thinking that it may be a good idea to get pet insurance.  My husband on the other hand thinks its a waste! I just keep thinking that anything could happen and be a huge financial burden.  I figured that if we have insurance  it can help monetarily in case of an emergency.

I try and say that we have insurance for our kids and ourselves but he says "he's a dog"!

what are your thoughts, suggestions, opinions???

thanks a bunch :)

Thank you Ricki!

Without a doubt yes, we have Pet Plan Gold.... in the past two months Jack has had medical bills over $1000.00 and we are not done..... all but $60.00 will be covered.   that is a little over two years worth of insurance for Jack right there.... Jack's insurance has gone up since he is 4.5 years old and I am on a VERY limited income.....

Just to be candid, I used my mortgage money to pay for Jacks care knowing full well I will be reimbursed ..if I didn't have insurance, I would be behind on my mortgage because I can tell you just from the minor thing of Jack with his tail being broke... hearing your sweet precious dog in pain or knowing it needs medical care and not having a way to give it to them is totally unimaginable for me.......

The peace of mind of me being able to tell a Vet do not skip anything with him I have insurance, or yes he can have the more expensive but safer for him medication, or yes, he can go to any specialist and I only have to pay 20 percent or yes when I go in the hospital his insurance will pay for someone to watch him.... Yes... unless, you are someone who can drop ten thousand dollars without it being a burden on your family I would say you can't afford not to have it.

Jack has better insurance then I do, he can have physical therapy, accupuncture, massages, and other things should he need it.   they may seem unnecessary but the amazing coverage of medical bills saves us every time.

That is why we always try to give to people who are foster parents or who rescued who's dogs have a pre exisiting condition and they can't get insurance on them .....because once a diagnoses is made, I don't know any insurance company that will cover them.

I have ASPCA and they pay promptly and it's easy to use the on-line account.  I've made 2 claims so far (in the first year) and my monthly premium went up a couple dollars a month. I'm not complaining about that because I'm still ahead of the game.

What are some good pet insurance companies for Canadians?

Stefan I'm Canadian and I have petplan but truepanion is also good in canada, those are the only two I even considered after doing a lot of research.

Nadia, my take on it was this. If something is to happen to Max, where I have to make decisions about his medical care, I don't want it to be based on can I afford it. I want to be able to say yes do whatever has to be done. I don't know about you, but there is no way I could afford $3000 out of pocket, but 25$ a month I can do, so even (and here is hoping) I never have to use it, it's still a good investment for peace of mind.
