Petland is no longer selling puppies from "breeders" and is only rehoming rescue dogs now.

I went to Petland today to buy new toys for my dogs and I walked by the section where they have puppies and cats for adopting. All the cages were empty.I couldnt believe my eyes.So i had to ask an employee where they were,She then told me that Petland is in a transition stage from selling puppies from breeders to only rehoming rescue dogs and cats and to check back in a couple of months to see them all. Then i can pick the one i want..I told her I was just curious and had two dogs of my own.I then thanked her and told her that was a great idea to only rehome rescue pets.I told her that now they were doing some good.I told her i was very happy to hear the good news and that I hope the best for them and the rescue pets. She loved the feedback and thanked me for my comments and opinions.I thought I would share this with all of you.                                                                                                                                    I just got off the phone with petland,Saskatchewan,Canada and they told me that this rescue program is going to be Canada wide. Some of the pets will be instore and some will not.The customers will be screened to the fullest extent and so on.

Jared, I wonder if this might not be just that particular store. Although it would be a dream come true, I don't think that all Petland stores are stopping their practice of selling puppies. Maybe next time you visit there, you could ask.

Either way, though, the store never sold "puppies from breeders." They sold puppies from puppy mills. It's wonderful that they have stopped doing that! An added bonus is that now you can buy whatever you want there without contributing your hard-earned dollars to animal abuse, which is of course what happens whenever anyone buys toys, food or anything else from a store that sells puppies.

Thanks for letting us know.

Absolutely!

The HSUS had a program a while back to try to help  pet store owners to eliminate the sale of pets, and become pet supply stores that also serve as rescue centers. I wonder if there is a program like that in your area, and this particular store is participating. Either way, it's wonderful.

Good news!

Wonderful news.  I hope it is Chain-wide, but if not perhaps it is the start of a trend.

The pet land in Vernon BC Canada, does not sell pets anymore either. Was in a few weeks ago they didn't talk about rescued animals, but they did say they would not be selling puppies, or kittens anymore. Rhonda

Maybe Canada is ahead of the U.S. in this. Good for you!

Great news if its true.  At least the rehome animals would get more exposure and possibly find a for ever home faster.

The Petland in my area stopped selling puppies too.  Couldn't have made me happier!

Now, that's really good news, because I'm in the same state!

I'll have to check the Petland near me (gag) and see if they are following suit. If this is really a chain-wide policy change, it's cause for fireworks!

In Ireland cats and dogs cannot be sold in Pet Stores, just fish, rabbits and birds so this is certainly a move in the right direction.  I wonder how they are going to manage the rehoming  of rescue dogs in a retail setting because if this is not done properly matching the right families with the right dog as well as all the necessary health checks then this could be one great publicity stunt which does not help the animals one bit to find their forever homes.

The stores near me (not Petland) who participate in rescue work do so in conjunction with the rescue group who actually has possession of and responsibility for the animals. The rescue is responsible for managing the health of the animals, and applications to adopt have to go through them, not the store employees. The store merely houses and showcases them, and of course, shows them to prospective adopters. I doubt anyone would be able to just walk in, see a rescue dog, and adopt on the spot, but then that's the idea. Impulse purchases and living creatures are not a good combination, lol.

Our Petsmart has a cat adoption centre.  They "showcase" kittys from the local Humane Society, which is great to give people exposure to the cats, but the actual adoption takes place through the Humane Society.
