IS THIS NORMAL. SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME IF THEIR DOODLE'S COAT IS LIKE THIS. HE HAS A AREA RIGHT ABOVE HIS TAIL THAT IS SHORT, COARSE, SPARSE, AND A DIFFERENT COLOR. REALLY UGLY. I REALLY HOPE HE DOESN'T END UP LOOKING LIKE THIS ALL OVER. THE VET SAYS THAT HE IS CHEWING ON THIS AREA. I DON'T BELIEVE THAT IS TRUE AT ALL. I AM INCLUDING PICTURES. IF ANYONE HAS ANY IDEA ON WHAT MAY BE HAPPENING TO MY PUPPY PLEASE LET ME KNOW. THANKS A LOT!
I am not sure what is going on. I do see the thinning,it looks "wet" in a pix.
Could maybe be allergies or the coat change. How old is your doodle? Is the skin underneath pick at all?
Jordan does have courser hair towards her tail but it is still soft and the same length and color. I think the courser hair towards the tail is normal with F1s.
Hi Johnna,
I was not sure what I was seeing in the pictures but I will tell you how Samantha's coat (F1) has changed. She came home with us when she was 11 weeks old - a smooth, lab like, chocolate bundle with 1 white hair above her tail.
When she was about 4-5 months old I noticed this wavy, coarser hair on the top of her neck. I thought it was due to a particular dog that was playing pretty rough with her at the dog park - that he may have done something to her skin. I knew that she was not scratching her neck - what did I know?
Well, that coarse, wavy hair goes down her back to her shoulders and again at the top of her tail. The section between has not really changed - other than it is longer & I assume that that will change sometime.
Her hair has not thinned out in those sections but is thicker.
Samantha she has 5 different coats at this age -
her legs (thinner, much lighter on the ends with darker hair at the skin),
her head (fantastic caramel highlights, thin, stands up spiral-like when not brushed),
her belly (soft, lab like and shorter but is growing slowly),
her neck and tail (thicker, wavy, and filled with kemp - the white hairs),
the area on her back at the 'waist' - straighter that her neck, no kemp, thinner
(I just reread that - it is true but she sounds like a freak - OMG. She really is beautiful - I am taking new pictures and show you after her shower today)
She won't be 10 months until Wednesday - I have no idea what her coat will end up being.
Maybe the changing coat on the back end of your Doodle may be the changes that Samantha is going through. It is like her coat is in the in-between stage. It is not the gorgeous chocolate, soft coat I fell in love with but what can I do? I was thinking (for a New York minute) about coloring and straightening her hair (LOL!!!) but the thought of doing it every 4 weeks like I do mine made me cringe.
I uploaded to my page 6 new pictures of Samantha's coat. If you want, check them out. Click on them so you can see them a little better. Let me know if that is what you see.

Sounds like what happened to Rosco's coat...I'll have to search for photos later but he developed harsh, coarse hair above his tail that moved up his spine. Everywhere else he is soft and fleecy...but along his spine he has coarse hair that is not as curly/wavy.
With a mixed breed dog, I think it's not uncommon to get a mix of hairs !! He may just be getting his adult coat; lots of doodles shed their soft and fluffy baby hairs. I honestly cannot see anything in the picture that looks out of the ordinary. Do you get him groomed professionally? If so, the groomer will probably know what's going on, if anything.
Hi.....My Kodie has different textures, and colors all over her body now...she'll be 11 months soon. She started out as a rich, butterscotch sort of chocolate...now, she is multi-toned with coarse hair in some places, and very soft, fine hair in other places.....I think she is beautiful...but, you know "beauty is in the eye of the beholder"......
