My 9 month old sometimes pees or poos on the pavement, though he is right near the grass. Since I do not always cathch him in the act ( see from afar), it is hard to stop it. He goes to the kennel quite a bit. Do you think that is why? How can I stop this?

You have to train him to go where you want. Pick a spot in your yard, everytime he goes outside, use a leash and take him to the potty spot and stay there until he goes. When he does him buisness, reward him with praise or a treat (whatever you use with training) and then you can let him off leash. It will take some time, but a dog can be trained to go in a spot if you put the work in. There is no quick magic fix for this.
He had a spot all winter when he was leashed and lost it with the melt down. He is now on Inv Fence so goes all over. He never did this before so I do not know why he chose a hard surface..he did it once on our walk in the street too and always goes in the grass. That is why I thought about the kennel where I am sure he goes on a hard surface. Thanks..
Most kennels are not allowed to have grass-due to state law. I know that is the rule in PA, so it may have alot to do with going to the kennel. It will be hard not to confuse him if he is expected to do it on the concrete at the kennel.
thanks..at first this confused me as he never did it before, but then I realized there may be a connection as he goes there quite a bit for daycare and boarding.
It may very well be the kennel...does nobody walk him in the kennel or is the walking area also concrete?

But I agree with Kingston Todd...even if he had a spot before, you may very well need to retrain him to it again. Do you know his poop schedule? Most dogs tend to poo at a certain time(s) of day so just take him on leash at those times.
