So after a fantastic day at the dog park with Shelby and Knox and after picking out about a bajillion burs from his fur and bathing him in a gallon of shampoo, Ollie was completely wiped out. After his bath and us napping, I noticed his paw pad had a flap of skin on it. It didn't bleed at all, and he was so tired that I didn't think it really even bothered him. Today is a different story. The dog is pitiful. He doesn't want to stand let alone walk. The flap of skin came off (he either chewed it or it fell off) and he looks at me like it's the worst thing in the whole world. I have to bring him his bowl of food and water and practically drag him down three, yes three, flights of stairs to go potty. I have put neosporine on it and right now I have a sock on him so he won't lick of the ointment. I plan to wait and see if he is still this sad tomorrow and if so I'll take him in. Is there anything I can give him for the pain? Is there anything I should look out for? It doesn't look too bad...it looks kind of like a popped blister. He is either a wimp or in a ton of pain. And those boots are now on my shopping list.

I've thought about taking Ollie on a tennis court! I didn't think about it possibly hurting feet! Ollie was on grass, dry dirt, and some asphalt. I think part of it is that his pads aren't tough yet. They got wet and muddy and then he sprinted around. His tear isn't too bad...it didn't bleed and now that he has let me get a better look at it...he may be being a bit over dramatic lol Did Milo's tear all the way off?
The first time it happened (after the tennis court), I only realized where the blood was coming from because a portion of his pad was hanging there (kinda like when we get blisters, dead skin is there until we peel/cut it off). The next morning that piece was missing so he must have chewed it off during the night. This time, the biggest pads on both front paws is raw and a different color than the rest, so it does look like the pad did tear off entirely. Its not really that red and he's not licking it (much) BUT he is not up and moving around. He walks to where he HAS to go and then lays down. He hasn't even gone out in to the yard today (as its a flight of stairs..that my husband carried him down - all 80lbs of him)! I think because its both front paws, he can't distribute his weight and chooses to just lay down. Poor guy, I feel bad for him. I've been reading about dog boots but I can't imagine him liking those and would probably try to pull them off but may be worth a try.
How is Ollie?
That's kind of how Ollie's looked, but it was just a real small circle. Ollie didn't move either, and his was just a tiny patch on one front paw. After a day (so now today) he is completely back to normal, like it didn't even happen. It's kind of crazy because he went from this really pitiful unmoving dog, to right back to normal. He wouldn't even move to eat there for a while. I think the sock helped, but Ollie was licking his. It's a good thing they heal so fast! I'm considering boots too (only for parks, trails, and other abnormal terrain).
Keep me updated on Milo!
