I am six months pregnant and the reality of it all is beginning to set in. I am worried that Rags will be needy and/or jealous and I won't be able to give her the attention she needs or is used to. I was thinking of getting a dog walker. Then that makes me feel guilty. Any suggestions?

As someone getting close to her due date (first baby) with three dogs, I want to tell you to NOT worry about it. Rags will cope just fine and while he may miss some attention while you're sleep deprived, DON'T feel bad for Rags. He'll be FINE. There's no reason to feel sorry for him. If nobody else in the house can give him the exercise or walks he needs while you tend to your newborn, then getting a dog walker is a GREAT thing to do, not something to feel guilty about. What would you be guilty of? Nothing but providing exercise for your dog. Rags won't hold it against you. Has he been around young children or babies before?

Not that I don't worry about anything...I'm an expert worrier =) But I worry more about my dogs smothering my baby with stinky doggy licks and not giving me space more than how they will cope. Thule, for sure, will want to bathe the baby 400 times a day...eeeek!

By the way...CONGRATULATIONS =) How are you feeling?
I had a dog who was my "baby" before I had human kids. I was a little concerned that the dog would be jealous of the baby, too. I had my husband carry the baby into the house when we brought the baby home, so my hands would be free for the dog!
My worries were for nothing. My dog was fine with the baby, and didn't demand any more attention than before. The biggest problem was trying to convince my germaphobic mother that it was okay for the "dirty" dog to be in the baby's room, kiss the baby, etc.
Congratulations on your pregnancy, and relax!

My biggest problem is trying to convince Wiggle Worm's mother that it is okay for the "dirty" dog to kiss the baby, etc ;-)
Hasn't Wiggle Worm's mother ever heard that a dog's saliva is antiseptic? She hasn't? Then let me tell her about it. It goes like this:
"You know how a dog licks its wounds to heal them? See, that's proof that a dog's saliva is antiseptic!"
I'm sure Wiggle Worm's mother will believe that. My mom did! ;-)
LOL--If they just kept their tongues off other various body parts and didn't enjoy eating dirt, I'd be okay. But you know me...I am one of those weird dog lovers who doesn't like doggy 'kisses' -- Thule has gotten WAY better about keeping her tongue inside her mouth near me, but I've seen her around babies and she doesn't have an off button on that tongue. Seriously...it just keeps going and going and going...eeeeeeeeeeeeeek!

I'll survive, though. Really. Somehowwwww.
I direct the dogs to my feet when they're being overly eager in licking. this would work with Wiggle Worm until she's old enough to put her feet in her mouth. But by then she'll be eating dirt, try keeping those little hands clean and her mouth off everything.
Rosco and Thule are SO different in licking.
I could breathe 'yummy' food breath 1 cm from his nose and he'll breathe it in and enjoy it and NOT even THINK about touching me with his tongue...he'll lick his own lips instead.
Thule on the other hand -- um yeah, she has NO boundaries. Even from feet away she'll try to reach you with her tongue...hoping it will reach like a frog's.

As to WW, I'm sure she'll develop an affinity toward doggy hair flavored things....Mmmm...doggy hair flavored pacifiers and bottle nipples, doggy hair flavored toys...YUMMY!
LOL just like the ever ready bunny
Sorry, I don't know how that happened, this should of been up a couple of posts
Yes, you will. And so will Wiggle Worm. And so will you, Joan! (Thought we forgot you, huh? LOL)
Human saliva really does have healing properties so dogs' saliva probably does too. I often suck on a small cut on my hand to help it heal faster. Too tired to look up scientific studies for Adina just now.
I had always heard that a dog's mouth is cleaner than a person's.
But my husband couldn't stand to see the dog kiss me or the kids. His usual comment was "You know what the dog uses for toilet paper, don't you?"
