Prong collar turning neck gray.

I recently started a training class with my doodle and I have to use a prong collar.  Well, I am noticing that the collar is discoloring the fur around her neck.  Not a pretty sight....grey ring around the neck of my beautiful cream doodle!  Any one else have this problem?  It is a Sprenger prong collar but I am not sure if it is stainless steel or chrome.

Stainless steel will not discolor the neck. That is what I use on my doodles . The chrome did that same staining you are talking about. HEre is a link to the ones, with a quick release, that I use:

Thanks so much for the suggestion to change from chrome to stainless steel.  We made the switch and now her neck is back to normal.....no more ring around the doodle neck!!  :)

Yes, we had the same problem. I'm not using the prong collar anymore, but Monty's neck gets gray thanks to his tags.

Jarka...maybe we need to come up with a plastic coating for those tags.  Maybe try coating them with clear nail polish.....I wonder if that would work?

That is an interesting idea. A couple of his tags are actually plastic, so those are not the culprits. The rabies tag is metal and so is his tag clip. Oh well, I learned to live with the gray chest. :-)

I tried the nail polish and it didn't work too well. But there are plastic rings you can put around the tags that keep them from jingling. There are also fabric pockets with velcro closures for tags. I don't have the rabies tag on. I keep it at home. Their main tag is stainless steel and has phone numbers, & mentions that they are licensed and vaccinated. I figure someone can check with me or the town if anyone gets to the point where they read tags. You will all visit me in jail, no?
