Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hello we have a 4 month old multigen goldendoodle puppy. We have noticed he has f been attacking his food like he used, he would usually finish his food and lately he hasn’t been. He is still on 3 scheduled feedings, 1/2 cup each of the victor brand food. He was doing perfectly fine with it until this past week. We had gotten him one of those kabobs treats and part of the ingredient was rawhide, he started having loose stools on and off a couple of separate incidents of vommiting a small amount of his food after, yet he is still playful and energetic, we are thinking about switching his food to taste of the whole salmon puppy food, but any suggestions on what you guys feed your doodles? Thanks in advance

Hi Renelie,
Regarding what other members here feed their doodles, we have a very large, very active group here on DK called The Food Group, where we have a list of Recommended Food Brands, as well as a list of safe healthy treat brands. Please join us! We have hundreds of discussions about every aspect of feeding our doodles.
Regarding your pup's current issues, there could be a number of different things going on. Four months is the age when many pups typically start showing us that their growth has slowed down and they are ready to have their midday meal eliminated and go to two feedings per day.
I'm not sure what the kabob treats are, but rawhide is indigestible and unsafe for dogs. In addition, some of the "kabob" treats I have seen are sourced from China (so unsafe) and contain some food colorings and other ingredients that can cause serious health issues in dog. Some dogs have died from rawhide. We have lots of ideas for safer chews in The Food Group.
Given that rawhide is indigestible, and can cause obstructions as well as just sit in the gut for long periods of time (which can trigger immune system diseases like IBD), along with the fact that your pup is suddenly not eating, vomiting, and having loose stools, it is possible that a piece of the kabob is still in his digestive tract. I would strongly suggest you take him to the vet and have an Xray done.

Once you know that everything is as it should be with his digestion, we can talk about food changes if you like. But changing his food now is only going to confuse the issue. Please take him to the vet.

Thank you so much. I will let my husband know and hopefully we can figure it out. We are starting the 2 feeding transition today so we’re keeping the 3/4 cup a feed for now, but even with that he left probably 1/4 of it. So we will see if he is more hungry bc of the long interval in feeding. Thank you again

I really feel that he needs to be checked by a vet. When you have a loss of appetite at the same time as vomiting and loose stools, in a young puppy, it needs to be checked sooner than later. Young puppies can dehydarte very quickly. It's really not about the food. Again, please have him checked by a vet.

Thank you. Not so much vomiting, like I mentioned it was a couple of his kibbles and separate incidents. So far his stools have been solid and we are down to two feedings and he did finish his dinner very much like he used to. He is very active, eats his baked treats that we got him like he normally would, he goes regularly and drinks his water like the good ‘ol Bucky I know! And I am not sugar coating anything nor refusing to take him, bc believe me I will be the first to go and take him if there is any other concern. Our vet is awesome that he assures us if there is a need for us to bring to him in. I had called and He did say as long as he is active, relieving himself in both cases, eating and drinking those aren’t any signs of obstruction. And that it happens every now and then that they will look like they are not interested in their food.
