Thanks, Chuck

I'm not an expert on training but I think for puppy classes they are all basic. I do think socialization is key! You should try googling any near by doggie day cares and see if they have puppy training classes available. Pet smart has puppy classes too!
Hi Chuck,
I was so thrilled to see the name AKRON. And if you are from Akron, here we call it, Akron Akron Akron Akron Akron.
Inside joke we Akronites know :)
I have a ton of information for you. I've been to several trainers in our area and have interviewed a great many more.
I can help you.
Can you tell me if you want to attend just a puppy class, an obedience class
(recommended)?
What area of Akron are you from? How far would you drive? Etc
You can also leave me a private message if you accept my invitation to private friendship I have sent to you
Hi Joanne and Chuck
I too have looked into obedience classes. I was leaning towards W.A.G.S in Hartville. It got really good reviews and is close to my house. Not to mention it seems very reasonable.....like $90 for 5 classes. Have you heard of them Joanne?? Who do you recommend?? I too am new to this site Chuck - I am picking up my doodle tomorrow.....so excited!!!
Tara,
Yes, I have heard good things about WAGS.
I have to ask this, how old is your puppy? Is it 8-9 weeks old yet? Whatever you do, do not get a puppy under this age. It will be extremely difficult in the long haul in many cases.
she is only 7 weeks. I know that's the youngest they should leave their siblings, etc. I would be ok waiting but the litter is all going home this weekend so if I didn't pick her up she wouldn't be with her siblings anyway. Why do you recommend 8-9 weeks?? What can I do to make it easier on her. I only work part-time but I took all of next week off so I could be home with her while she is adjusting.
Thanks Joanne :)
Search on the internet. Many articles tell you why puppies should not leave too early. Bite inhibition is one and there are many more articles with lists of behavior problems that may arrive.
Many states, it is against the law for any puppy to leave earlier than 7 weeks. Best to wait at the least 8 weeks. 9-10 the best
It is happening more and more. Breeders want that $$ but they do not want to invest TIME to make a good puppy. Good money Good Puppies
Recently, we have had many posts on DK with some people who need help with the problems they are facing because of this. We are seeing so much. So, it is something to be aware of.
Here is a summation of one article. I hope this helps.
Puppies can begin to be separated from their dam at 6 weeks, but need to stay with their littermates until they are 8 weeks old, before they can go to new homes.
The canine socialization period takes place between week 6 and 8, and is one of the most important stages of development of the dog. What they learn from their dam and littermates during this period greatly influences the rest of their lives. During this stage the puppies learn bite inhibition and canine socialization skills that are critical skills for a dog, and dogs that miss this stage often have behavioral problems which land them in shelters later in life. They may have serious problems getting along with other dogs, and can have problems with biting, because they never learn to adjust the pressure of their bite, and that teeth hurt.
In the sue happy society we live in today, every breeder owes it to their prospective puppy owners to give their dogs the best start possible, and this means keeping the pups until they reach 8 weeks.
Weeks 8-12 are the human socialization period, during which pups should go to their new homes. If left with their littermates during this stage, they will often form closer bonds with canines than they do with humans.

As I am not fond of PetsMart in store training we have some in our area. Many good dogs have been trained there, but in the long run, you really want to establish a good, long-term relationship with a dog trainer. The next two years are important for a life-long with your dogs.
One thing that is extremely important, and many here on DK will agree, who is your trainer??
Today, you can get a mail-order dog training certificate. Pay the money, and you are a trainer. In Ohio, if you have been incarcerated, dog-training is common in many of our institutions to rehabilitate our inmates. I have met a few, I liked only one. And then, I didn't like having him work in our home when we had a problem dog. I do think, this is great in many ways. They are taking the shelter dogs and rehabbing them. Great work has been done in conjunction with shelters. But, I want a established trainer for my dog.
Right now, you may both be going to Puppy Kindergarten. GREAT! :) I am actually so pleased you both want to start early. This first year is so important. Let's get started early.
What I looked for, and I learned this from DK, is how much training the dog trainer had.
Find a trainer with competition experience. Here is an explanation of Competition/ Trial experience. Ask the trainer how many dogs they have trailed?
Seriously, this is a like a college degree in dog training.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obedience_trial
This takes a lot of work and years in the process. These are dedicated and accomplished trainers. Does your trainer fit these categories? Have they trialed. How many dogs placed. What rankings?
I met a man last year, who told me he was a Behaviorist and he lived in Springfield area. BEWARE. People can put anything on a business card and sell that to you. He did basic training from behind bars after assaulting young boys :(
So, just some things to look out for.
My favorite, and by far my most successful classes were in Seville. Sounds far, but just a 19 minute drive. Our area Police dogs are trained at this facility. So are, our local trainers! Most of the good ones have spent time at the Scarberry's facility.

Right now, you both have puppies. Babies! 5-6 months is a good time to start a good base with Obedience Training. If you take puppy kindergarten for socialization you should be ready to jump right into the next session with basic obedience.
If you would like to ask me privately about a trainer in our area, feel free to send me a private message.
To the both of you, WELCOME TO DK
May I invite both of you to join The Ohio Group and Training Group here on DK
