Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I'm eagerly awaiting my Doodle puppy in October. The pictures of the pups are adorable, but their hair is not very curly. I'm wondering if Goldendoodles hair gets curlier as they grow older?

Thank you from a forum newbie,

Michele

My doodle is pretty straight but gets curliest when he is long haired and air dried..... It depends if they get the poodle fur more I think ;)

Well, my first doodle had not so curly hair and it stayed not so curly.  My second doodle had very curly hair and it stayed about the same.  My third doodle had messy curly hair and it stayed that way also.  In my opinion, the hair doesn't change that much.  What you see is what you get.  But you love them, no matter what they look like.

Some are very curly! Check out Joanne's Spud. Some are wavy, Some are scruffy and some are smooth haired. You get a lot of coat varieties with Doodles. Some shed, some don't. It's a bit of a box of chocolates, lots of variations on a theme. One thing is for sure they are all adorable. I have noticed that a lot of the curly ones are F1B which is 75% one parent breed (often poodle) and 25% the other parent who is an F1 ( a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle)

What kind of goldendoodle are you getting?  Can you post some photos here?

Sophie had totally straight hair when got her.  After her first haircut at 6 months, we could see some wave in her fur.  It's definitely starting to look more thick and wavy.  I've heard they go through a lot of coat changes.

Thanks everyone for the advice! Here's a pix of one of the pups from the litter. We don't know which one we are getting yet though.

Yellow Collar Girl

Hard to tell.  This pup looks like he/she has some waves on the ears and possibly longer hair on the face.  Those are good signs of a fluffy coat, but it's a small photo so hard to tell.  If you look at our group called "From Pup to Adult" you'll see some timeline photos of doodles and their puppy photos so you can see how some coats develop.  If the breeder is experienced and a good one, she'll be able to lead you to the right puppy.  Are you wanting SUPER curly like a poodle or just wavy?  Is shedding an issue?  If shedding is not an issue, I'd go with the pup that had the best temperament for your lifestyle/family's needs.  Personality trumps coat style any day!

I think Nicky's take on doodles, "It's a bit of a box of chocolates" is a perfect analogy of the beauty of getting a goldendoodle.  You never know, but each one is special and wonderful in their own way...and in the end it really doesn't matter because from the moment you first lay eyes on them , they capture your heart...and it is instantaneous pure LOVE!

Our Oskar is a double doodle...he was rather straight & scruffy when he was little...now he's curly all over.
