Do you all think this site is a "reliable" source?  Jack is coming up in a few months on needing a Rabies Vaccine.  I know he is not allowed in the state of SC to be titer tested for that like he is all the other shots that we no longer get because he shows high titer amounts against.

I have been researching trying to decide if I am going to go with a one year or a three year vaccine.  When he was One.. He got the three year vaccine because I didn't even know there were different options... AKA brand new dog owner.

I have been trying to find the difference in the 1 vs the 3 year as far as difference in medication amount? Type of vaccine they are using. I have not been able to find any. This site which I know if I was writing something for when I was in Nursing school I would not use is the only one I can find that out right says the vaccines are the exact same just with a different label that extends the time. That seems insane to me..... I would love for that to be true of course but I bring it to you all, what do you think?

That is true Jen. I am a registered vet tech in NC. We use the exact same vaccine for a 1 or 3 year shot. 1 year is given as a first shot - puppies or dogs with no vaccine history. Second shot is considered to be 3 year as long as there is no lapse between them.

Wow Thanks for information. I wonder why they still offer. One year shots to dogs UTD on all shots.....thanks for information. I love this site.

Because Jack is so tiny I would ask the Vet if she can titrate the dose.  I don't know if she can, but I'm going to ask the same question for Guinness.

Jane do you mean give the total dose at two separate times...like half and half? Do you think it would be effective? I would like to do that too.
Do you get Guinness titer tested for his other vaccines, or do you go on and give him the shots? We are going on our third year of titer testing......I would assume eventually Jack is going to need a booster...but who knows.

I just meant to ask your vet if the dose should be calibrated to reflect Jack's size.  That's a question I plan to ask about Guinness.  I have not done titers in the past but I will this year.

I totally assumed that they would of course give the vaccine by weight no? When Jack got his first rabies shot he was only 6 pounds I can not imagine that he would be getting the same dose as a pit bull or even a standard dog.. Oh that would make me sick....

I am a big fan of titers though I don't have any proof that less actually shots are better.. in my mind I like the idea as LONG as he is showing excellent protection.

They like the Titer to be 5:1 to consider it acceptable... meaning you still have antibodies when the blood is diluted down five times....... At least that is how I understand it.  Most tests will only go as fat as diluting it to the 5:1 ... I always have requested that they go further so that I have an exact number so that I can see if he is starting to decline in his immunity, SO far in the three years he had it done, he did not go down once.

Also, sometime to consider, those dogs on prednisone will not always make as strong of an antibody reaction..... For a human the amount of Prednisone I am on you can give me a shot every day and I will not make an antibody for it, no matter how hard they try.. it is pointless

It makes me wonder how many dogs on here who are on higher doses of prednisone actually have immunity to the things they are getting shots against...
