Rosie has been a fussy eater, I've changed from one kibble to another. She was spayed almost two weeks ago and had a bout with very loose stools. Her vet had me do the rice and hamburg diet which she loved so it got me to thinking I would try cooking for her instead of "store bought". I've been reading through recipes and info on the Food Group and the information is very helpful. Since she is six months old, are there different recipes for puppies vs adult dogs? I went to Sams Club yesterday and loaded up on chicken, beef, rice and veggies but want to make certain that I don't leave out anything she still needs. Thanks for your help.

You probably want to make sure she is not getting too much protein and not enough carbs. According to Pitcairn, growing puppies need about 550-600 calories a day with 33-35% protein, 40%fat, 21% carbs. (The fat seems high to me). You might want to do further research on other ingredients. Calcium is also important for growing puppies so don't leave that out.
Dot,

Another thing you might consider are the foods from Honest Kitchen. It's a dehydrated meat/vegetable/fruit combo - you just add some warm water, let it set for a few minutes and voila - food that dogs love. My doodle Penny is so finicky that it's been a challenge to find the right food (even cooking on my own!). She loves the Honest Kitchen food and I know she's getting a good, healthy organic balance. I often add in some cooked chicken or turkey and she goes nuts for it.

They have a special line for puppies - and what's great is they sell their food in "sample" envelopes, so you can try them before having to buy a big box. Their website is: http://www.thehonestkitchen.com

Good luck!
Well I went to the store that sells Honest Kitchen but they only had big boxes for $65 and I didn't want to put out that kind of money without knowing whether Rosie would eat it or not. So, I just order some sample packets online. I hope she likes it - sounds like it would be easier than starting from scratch. Thanks for your help. Dot
I did some additional shopping today: kidney beans, cottage cheese, veggies, brown rice and salmon so I should be able to put something together that will satisfy her palate. I also checked on the Honest Kitchen site and found that it is sold about 12 miles from home and, more importantly, I am going over in that direction tomorrow so I will absolutely stop by and pick some up. Sounds like an easy way to get her good meals. I'll let you know how we do. Thanks
Hi - for what it is worth I feed my two girls raw and they are very healthy dogs with very shiny coats. If you feed your dogs home cooked food which I think is great - make sure you dont feed them cooked bones (very dangerous and can splinter and cause major internal injuries) but do make sure to give her some meaty raw bones to chew on, such as lamb ribs, pork ribs nothing too big at her age. My girls also love chicken necks, this will give Rosie all the calcium she needs and keep her teeth nice and clean. I give Cassie raw egg beaten up with a bit of lactose free milk 3 times a week and she loves this. They love cottage cheese and hard cheese given as treats and the occasional salmon or other oily type fish. Neither girl is keen on vegies or fruit.

I used to cook a lamb stew for the girls occasionally which included lamb forequarter chops, (I boned these after it was cooked) garlic some dry herbs, and a little bit of tomato ketchup (not too much just a little for flavour) they used to enjoy this - DO NOT EVER FEED ROSIE ONION as this is highly toxic I also used to make a meatloaf made of the same ingredients but with mince beef not the lamb. . But I must admit their preference is their raw diet.

I have never been able to feed them kibble because I have always wondered what quality of food goes into making it and the procedures they use. I have always lived with the principal if I wouldnt put it in my mouth then why should they eat it!

Good luck with whatever you do with her diet - it is always a worry that our babies are eating correctly.
