Tonight my husband surprised me with a "date night" and took me to a fancy dinner and then to...the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus. I am not even kidding you, I had tears in my eyes when I found out that's where we were arriving to- but I tried to hide it because he worked so hard to plan this for me.

We had a discussion a few weeks ago about how I had never been to a circus. I didn't tell him about the suffering of the animals and how I never WANTED to go to a circus, just that I hadn't been.

I am home now, 2 hours later, and still so upset I could cry. Seeing those sick people prod elephants with pointy objects and whip lions and tigers...it killed me.

I just had to vent about this. I love animals so so much.

I haven't been to the circus since the last time when the tigers looked ill and sedated. So sorry your husband' swell meaning gesture was so off base.

What a  wonderful husband you have to plan what he thought was a wonderful experience that you had missed out on - that is what you have to think about. Too bad he didn't get the 'why' of your not going to a circus.

Oh no!  It is better if you could attend the circus one time in your life without knowing about the negatives.  It does seem magical for a child. I bet that is how he remembers it himself.

What a sweet husband you have!!!! He wanted you to experience that magic!

Oh dear-talk about a back fired plan.  But he meant well, and that was so sweet.

I know the circus upset you....but the show was going to go on with or without you.  (Sadly, I know).   Try to let it go and revel in what a wonderful, thoughtful, sweet man you have.

What a sweet thing he tried to do.  Wanting to give you the magic, but you felt the misery.  Don't hold it against him. I loved it as a child, but I can't bear it now either.

I feel kind of silly that I posted this but I was just so emotional afterwards lol!!! You are all right, and I know this- that I am blessed to have a wonderful husband. And yes, Carol, the show will go on because that entire place was FILLED! Thanks for the support everyone.

Well, you have to give him credit for planning and setting the evening up!  My DH has never surprised me with a date, trip, or vacation! I have to plan it all:)  I am with you on the Circus and the way they treat animals.  My husband took our five year old son once (40 yrs ago) with his friend to the circus.  The second act was a woman dangling from a motor cycle and she was not doing well, fell off and was gone when she it the cement.  Needless to say in this house we have NEVER been to another circus!   I'm sorry you evening was not your favorite, but at least you had a nice fancy dinner!

I am with you. I HATE circuses, but I am sure your husband meant well. I used to get so excited as a child to go to the circus, but with age comes wisdom :) I could barely sit through the movie Water for Elephants and was so mad at my husband for making me stay. He kept saying it would get better. Luckily, he was right, because I was so mad. LOL

HA, Laurie, I read the book and KNEW I was not ever ever going to see the movie, not only for the animal cruelty but the human cruelty too!

I read the book later. I had to skip many of the parts. I spent most of the movie texting my daughter telling her how miserable I was :)

The horrible accident at yesterday's Ringling Brothers performance in Providence, R.I., is a reminder of the many possible dangers that lurk under the big tent. This catastrophe had nothing to do with the treatment of animals, but landed nine people in the emergency room:  Official: Clamp to Blame in Providence, RI Circus Accident.
