Sad for any dog and family to have to go through this, but just look at this beautiful doodle. Looks happy in the video-heartbreaking to know how sick he really is. I was just happy to see our local news get the story out to make more people aware.
Hi everyone!

This really is so sad, but I give these owners so much credit. They are doing what is necessary to ensure that their Doodle can have the best quality of life possible. I see no "boo hooing" from this guy or talking about rehoming the Dood because he has to go out every 30 minutes and can't be left alone or what the meds are costing him. He is only concerned about his Doodle and helping others to avoid this. How refreshing....now to get these treats off the store shelves.
Thanks Jane-I saw exactly what you are saying. The dog is blessed in having these owners to care for it the way they are-we know a lot of people would not. By takng him to work he is getting to enjoy all that extra precious time together also.
I am so discouraged by all of these stories about chicken jerky from China. It is making people focus on chicken jerky as the culprit, and people are not understanding that it is all treats and pet foods from China. It's like 2007 never happened. But back then thousands of dogs and cats died, and thousands more were made permanently ill, from Chinese ingredients in the foods and treats. Allyson's Tacky is one of them. I just can't understand why nobody seems to be aware of that. Books were published on it, it was all over the news. Did all those animals die in vain, did nobody learn anything from that? Now they keep talking about chicken jerky as if you can buy any other kind of treat and that would be okay. It's treats from China, period.
It's up to us to keep ourselves informed.
I agree Karen-it's jerky first then...from China. People do focus on the one item and it's a shame that common sense doesn't kick in. We were at Sam's Club and a lady was buying Milos meatballs and we were standing there and we politely asked if she's heard about the issues they are having with those treats and she said....ready...that was the jerky treats not the meatballs. We explained it and she thanked us and put them back on the shelf. I couldn't work at a pet store and sell these items to people without blurting something out!
After JD was sickened by that hambone in 2010, which may very well have been the trigger for his IBD, I talked to the store manager at my local Pet Supplies Plus. She said that she warns people about it if they ask, but obviously doesn't see each customer buying it. She said that has no control over what products are sold in the store, those decisions are made by the corporate office, but if it were up to her, she would not carry it.
I guess I should be angry at the corporate management, or the distributor, or the store owner, or the government, but I blame myself. I am the one who chose to buy it. It was made in America, all natural, etc., but I didn't do any research. If I had, I'd have seen the many internet stories about the dangers of these bones. My fault 100%, and JD is paying for it.
Jennifer, don't even bother. There's already a "group" there, Pet Parents against treats from China" or something like that, and it's like the blind leading the blind. They say things like "Ol' Roy is okay, though, right?" and give their dogs Milkbones and buy dog food at Walmart. As long as it's not chicken jerky, it must be okay. Their whole philosophy seems to be that if the government doesn't tell you something isn't good for your dog, it's their fault if the dog gets sick. And the government has to send someone to your house to tell you, because they don't know about newspaper or news on TV. If it's not on FB, they never heard about it.
This would not be the link to post, lol. The story emphasizes chicken jerky which is not the problem.
Animal Parents Against Pet Treats Made in China is the FB group. Their purpose is to get the word out that anything from China is dangerous and should be banned in the US. They are trying to get the FDA to recall this garbage but until the FDA finds out exactly what is make our pets sick, the FDA says nothing will be done. This group is trying to push the FDA by getting petitions signed, etc.
Sadly, few people have a family like DK to share and educate. Most people believe commercials and are shocked when they hear different. I learned here about pet stores and PMs. You have to have heard from someone somewhere that something needs to be researched.
Remember the original actress that did the Milo's commercials - She had 2 teenagers and a collie? The FB group contacted her, sent her information and she wound up breaking her contract and is no longer their spokesperson.
I would question that "most people believe commercials". Commericals have been around forever, and most of us who are over 21 understand that it is advertising to try to sell something, and you don't believe everything you hear, especially when it's being presented by the person who makes the profits. Nobody runs out and buys a car because a commercial says it's a great car. Educated consumers read reviews, Consumer Reports, and other independent information before making purchase decisions. Nobody teaches us that.
The information about the dangers of Chinese ingredients in pet foods has been in the media since 2007. With every recall since then, it's been presented in the media that the huge corporations like Del Monte, Mars, Proctor & Gamble, etc. use imported ingredients. If newspapers, TV news reports, internet news articles, internet pet forums, shows like Oprah Winfrey, books, and magazine articles are not enough to "get the word out", I don't have much hope that a group of pet owners who had no idea about this before now are going to be successful, lol. The fact is that the economic impact to the huge multinational corporations if Chinese ingredients were banned would be so enormous, it just will never happen. The companies are not going to stop making pet food, and they will not pay for local ingredients. They will continue to use food brokers who purchase from whoever has the lowest price. That's the free enterprise system and the way business is done since NAFTA. If everything that can cause harm was banned, cigarettes would not still be on store shelves. We cannot depend on the government to make purchase decisions for us. It's up to pet owners to learn what to buy and what not to buy, with many many tools available at our disposal.
If people weren't gullible and believe what they see on TV, these foods would be off the shelves because no one would buy them. Pet stores would have been out of business years ago if people knew where they came from. Most people are uneducated in so many ways.
It is up to us who know better share that info. I share my story about Samantha and how quietly I was educated - WOL!
The group on FB isn't teaching about the danger of China products, they are a group of incredible people trying to get the government to get off their duffs and do something about it! Those who join the group are either trying to help or those whose dogs have died.
We all that If these products were bad for kids, the FDA would have done something already! I agree with you that we all must make decisions for our families but if you don't have a clue....... I was clueless as I am sure you remember and I am no dummy. It just never occurred to me where puppies came from that are in pet stores. Just as too many believe that doodles are 'hypoallergenic', etc.
