Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hello all,

I completely understand that members are not allowed to give publicly express or comment on breeders through this forum. I am currently in the process of speaking with a breeder in SC that seems ethical and loving towards the dogs. It is a small scale breeder and it isn't their main profession... The only problem is I have not had any chance to find online reviews of other people purchasing from them! So I was wondering if someone would be open to talking with me (via messages) about this certain breeder to help give me guidance and abide by the forum rules!

Thank you so much!!!

Hi Daniel, if you have not read our checklist of What To Look For in a Breeder, please do, and take it to heart. This is the minimum you should require; if anyone can't meet these guidelines, walk away. It's fine that someone seems ethical and loving, but you need more than that when you are looking at the next 12 to 15 years of sharing your home and your heart with a dog. You need proof. :)

I second what Karen said! Read and follow the checklist.

I spent a very long time researching and contacting references.  I ended up passing up on breeders that were closer to me to get to the right breeder. (8 hours away)  I have never regretted my decision!!

I have been in touch with several people that purchased locally (the ones I passed on) and they have had all sorts of problems.

The mentioned article is a great check list.  The difficult thing is how quickly we compromise our wants because of those cute faces.  Stay strong in what you want.  And ask lots of questions to the breeder.  If your gut tells you to move on...do so, even if it means you have to wait for another litter!!  and yes, that is very difficult to do!!

Thank you for your replies! I did read the "What to look for in a breeder" before posting here. I have sent the breeder these questions and beyond. He has been very understanding and provided proof to me. I guess I am just a very non trusting person especially when putting a deposit down without reading/knowing/hearing of people that have gone through with that breeder before.

Unfortunately, it's necessary to be "non trusting" with this kind of life-changing decision.

When you googled the breeder's name and the business names (i.e. "Pie In the Sky Doodles") nothing comes up on-line? Are you able to visit the breeder?

Have you talked with other pup owners from this breeder? I had my breeder give me a list of people to contact, and I emailed and called EVERY one of them.  I did this with several breeders.  I contacted owners of pups that were from our 'dad' because the breeder was using a new 'mom'. I also contacted other pup owners from different parents of that particular breeder.

You can get a sense of how that breeder treated the owners before and after the purchase.  It is a lot of money to put down for an unknown!

If this is a first go around for this particular breeder, then you need to realize you may not get the pup you want.  These are a hybrid breed and genetics can't be controlled.  The experienced breeders are able to judge what kind of pups they will have based on knowing what the parents 'usually' produce.

If you have concerns for regarding getting an allergy friendly pup, only go to a breeder that yields that type of dog.

I did the same thing and totally forgot - it's a great idea.

If you include the name of the breeder here, people can reply to you in a private message. That might be a good way to get some feedback about the breeder you are considering.

Once again, thank you so much for all your replies. This really is a great community! I've been busy graduating so I could only get to a computer again now! The website name of the breeder is www.bestgoldendoodles.com I will be moving down to Florida but am currently located not too far away from SC. I'm in no rush to get a puppy, just thought I'd start looking and if I found something, then I'd put a deposit down and wait for the right fit! With plenty of places in Florida that have gotten great reviews I am not worried if this SC breeder is not good.

I don't see one word about genetic health testing of the breeding dogs on the web site. That's the most important factor in choosing a breeder. And all the talk about "hybrid vigor" is absolute baloney.

Also, are you aware that these people also breed Labradoodles and Aussiedoodles? They have at least three doodle websites. Apparently, not quite as small an operation as they'd like you to believe.

http://doodle-puppies.com/

And the Labradoodle site says they give a one year health warranty, which is substandard.

Oops make that 4 sites : http://bestaussiedoodles.com/

And here he is advertising puppies for sale on an on-line multiple listing site, which is always a bad sign. Five litters of pups in one month, also a very bad sign.
