So we had out first visit at the vet yesterday.Sam's 4 months old and has very thin hair.Is possible for him to go through hair changes?Plus he is almost hairless on his belly.
Our vet suggested to shave him when he's 6 months old.
Opinions or suggestions please!

I am wondering what reason your vet gave for shaving him at 6 months (or ever?). It's been pretty much proven that shaving doesn't cause hair to grow back thicker, for dogs or for humans. And shaving dogs exposes them to the risk of sunburn as well as taking away their natural insulation against both heat and cold. I've never had a vet recommend shaving any dog unless the coat was matted and there was no choice.

Dogs do go through coat changes from puppyhood to adulthood, and the hair usually does get thicker and coarser. Shaving has no effect on that.

Hello, Karen
I really don't want to shave him.. That's why I asked for opinions.. Thank you for your input..
for some reasons he believes helps..

It is possible to ignore certain non-health related advice from our vets. I do it all the time, lol. Just don't shave him.

LOL,I'm with you Karen. We had a rottweiler for 9 years and believe me,we did not follow vet orders,if was no need...
He is MY BABY,with thin hair(if that's the case),healthy and happy..

Hello. Such a cutie!

I thought they do not have adult coat till 1 year old?

So should I be concerned?

There are often several coat changes before a year old. Every dog is different. At a year old, they generally have the coat they are going to have.

And at any rate, a thin coat is nothing to be concerned about. It has no effect on the dog's health or well-being. My Labradoodle has a thin coat and very little hair on his belly. That's just the way he is, it has no effect on his life.

Thin can be nice!  Two of my dog's coats are so thick that getting a brush or comb through is really difficult.  I think Sam is absolutely adorable.  Shaving would not be an option in my book. I would only ever shave a dog is if he were so matted there was no option. I know a groomer who says to shave to get the coat to thicken so there is some old-school myths going on.  She is NOT my groomer.  My groomer strongly disagrees with her.

I already know : I am not shaving him! Thank you everyone !!

Good decision, Maria!  :-}

He looks like he has great hair.  I have one doodle that has super think hair and the other is more on the thin side - it dries quickly and is very easy to keep.  Brush him regularly and he will be very handsome!

Thank you Linda!
