My Doodle sheds! I didn't expect it at all. Was told he would be low to no shedding. Is it puppy hair? Will it get better?

LeAnn, A lot of doodles shed! Sadly, so many are told there is a 0% chance. Not true.

Some hair is normal.  Just like humans, we don't shed, but we do loose hair everyday. So do doodles.

I'm sorry you were told he does Not.

We try to tell people here on DK constantly: Doodles can and do shed.  They are not allergy friendly.  Size is unpredictable.

We have a group here for doodles that shed.  Join the many of us.

But, we love our dogs and we have really NICE vacuum sweepers.

Good to know...Thanks. I have a good vaccum also and use it often. Size wise, hes about right on so far, but we'll see if he keeps growing :) How do i find the group for doodles that shed? Thanks again

Joanne, I've been meaning to ask you... I'm in the market for a new vacuum and you mentioned you have a nice one that does great with pet hair. May I ask, what kind you have? I've got a Golden that sheds like C-R-A-Z-Y and I'd love something better to battle that with!!

I know you were asking this question of Joanne, but I just wanted to say that I love my Dyson--I got a refurbished one on eBay so it was a couple of hundred dollars cheaper than the going price. You can PM me if you want details.

Thank you Becka.  And lucky you. I would love a Dyson but I bet I would break that too

Ha!  I am the wrong person to ask as I have broken more sweepers than anyone.  My sons were in charge of sweeping and they would run over broken guitar strings. Maybe on purpose so they wouldn't have to do that job?

Many family members worked in a famous brand manufacturing facility in our area, now in China, and I would break those too.  I really can not review this .... :)   Good luck though

I did though, used to run a sweeper over my Mastiff. He loved it!    Maybe your Golden might too?

It is not a very active group. More like a roll call to show that yes, doodles shed.

Hi LeAnn,

Here's the link to the group: http://www.doodlekisses.com/group/sheddingdoodles

Our pup shed early on which was pretty scary as we both have asthma. After she turned 6 months or so it slowed down and it stopped after a year. Hopefully your pup will be the same. I do think it's about the puppy coat. Hang in there :)

Oh I hope your right :) Thanks

It is all in the way you look at shedding.
I've had two doodles of my own, and taken in a few fosters.
-Doodles who shed-require lower maintenance time in grooming. Brush, Bathe, Brush, and Go
-Doodles who do not shed need daily brushing at home and the expensive trip to a groomer every 6 weeks to 2 months. Expensive. Time consuming and a lot of care. Hours and hours!
So, it is a trade-off. That's all. But, the love of a dog is priceless

This is very true!! And my groomer told me the same :) She grooms a couple other doodles and they come every 2 months.

Yep. I had non-shedding dogs all my life before JD, and it was three hours a week with the brush and comb, and a professional haircut and grooming every six weeks. Jackdoodle never needs a haircut, it takes 15 minutes to brush him a couple of times a week, and the cost of having him groomed is half of what it was with my poodles, even though he's much bigger.
