Should I be MAD, ANGRY or NOT WORRY ABOUT THIS? Just got our puppy today..

We reviewed his medical records and it seems he was treated with antibiotics for two weeks something called ALBON.

Anyone familiar?

Albon (generic name: sulfadimethoxine) for dogs is an antibiotic medication used to treat bacterial infections in dogs. It is also used to treat a coccidiosis, a serious parasitic infection in dogs. Albon for dogs is available in a tablet or liquid form. It is also available as an injection. The use of Albon requires a prescription from a veterinarian. In tablet or liquid form, Albon is usually given once every 24 hours. The first dose your dog takes may be larger then the following doses.

  1. Special Note

    • Note that this medicine is also available for cats. Do not use the cat medicine on dogs or the dog version for cats. The doses will not match, in which case your pet might encounter severe side effects, or the medication will be ineffective.

    What Can Albon Treat?

    • Albon is approved for the treatment of infections caused by organisms that include staphylococcus, escherichia and salmonella. Among the infections it treats are respiratory infections including tonsillitis, bronchitis and pneumonia; skin infections; anal gland infections; skin wounds; urinary tract infections; and infections in the uterus. Your vet may recommend this medication for other infections not listed here. Your vet may also switch your dog from another medication to Albon if your dog's infection isn't getting better.

I think it is good that this breeder treated the puppy for the infection and gave you the honest medical record.

i think maybe you are more annoyed b/c the breeder didn't tell you about it - when you were there.

My breeder did not tell me that my pup had giardia and told me to give him meds - just b/c the pup might be stressed about going to a new home.  My pup didn't seem distressed so I didn't give him the meds - til he got bloody dirrahea and then I began investigating the "med" she gave me to take home with me.  and sure enough it was to clear up the giardia.

If my breeder told me from the beginning.  It would have been so much better for me and the pup. - who suffered from very bad dirrahea for 2-3 days til I put him back on the meds.

But after reading a lot of the giardia cases here - I did feel a lot better knowing that it was something a lot of pups have.

The people here are really knowledgeable about this kind of stuff and it seem like - this is also something a lot of pups have.  I Hope the pup is cleared of whatever parasite he had.

Thanks everyone!!

All your comments made us feel much better and it seems like it's a pretty common thing and maybe a precaution.

You have all relaxed us and we appreciate that!

On another note we are not jumping the gun here but he seems to be almost perfect!  Pees and poops outside, not rowdy and just adorable.  He may be trying to sell us a bag of goods and will show his true colors tomorrow  :)

Enjoy him.
Congratulations and welcome to your new pup.

I got Murphy on a Saturday as a 6 week old pup. His first stools were normal but by Saturday night, not so much.

He was a very sick little guy and didn't get diagnosed until Monday....with Coccidia.  He was put on Albon.
