UPDATE- SOPHIE IS GETTING HER SURGERY! AND YOU HELPED DO THIS! THANK YOU ALL!
HOMELESS GD NEEDS OUR HELP!!!!
This beautiful curly 2-yr-old girl is desperately in need of costly cataract surgery to restore her eyesight! She was surrendered to a humane society shelter by her owner, who was unable to care for her. The Humane Society would not adopt her out due to increasing blindness because of operable cataracts, and would not pay for the surgery to restore her sight; Second Chance Animal Rescue pulled her from the kill shelter and is trying to raise money for the surgery. Please take a look- we can give her 14 years of being able to see this wonderful world around her! Any donation in any amount will help; even $5. Thank for looking. (photos also below)

Sophie's story..... unable to play ball because she cannot find the ball because of bad eyesight. How very sad. We can make a difference in this dog's life. The gift of being able to see again. Thanks to Karen for organizing this forum and to the doodlekisses members for their big hearts. I am donating money for Sophie through PayPal. Please keep us updated on her condition. Happy Holidays, Lisa
I JUST GOT A CALL FROM LINDA, THE CO-ORDINATOR AT SECOND CHANCE RESCUE!
SOPHIE'S FUND IS NOW UP TO $580.00 !!!!
Linda has visited our post here, and she thanks all of us for helping to get the word out; she thinks many of the donations that have come in have come from DK members and their friends. She said that they are hoping to raise 3/4 of the cost of the surgery, so we still have a ways to go, but regardless, Sophie WILL have her surgery eventually.
C'mon, Doodle Kissers! Let's help Sophie!
I also made a small correction in her information...she was actually an owner relinquishment to the kill shelter! So she did have a home and lost it! And now, losing her eyesight. Well, not if WE can help it!
We can give her back her eyesight, and that will help her get a new home, too!
ARGH! That just infuriates me! All the more reason we need to help her. I just don't understand how her previous owners (notice I didn't say family) could surrender her to a KILL shelter! She is such a doll baby!
My brother once rescued a blind boxer from an owner that had taken her to the vet to be put down because she was too much work! Mind you, my brother was single, young and pet-less at the time and was only at the vet because he was taking my dad's dog to the vet as a favor. His boxer Keller went on to have a long happy life, almost 13 years, and knew the love of a family. She was trained to hand signals and was a joy to all who knew her. Pets with special needs are no less worthy than their "healthy" counterparts.
In fairness, I think I was told that the original owner had some health problems of his/her own. The really sad part is how many people are not aware that there are options other than a kill shelter (or ANY shelter...which is usually a very stressful situation for a dog, especially one who is used to living in a home.)...rescues like IDOG, Second Chance, and so many others.
Another issue that I have been very surprised by in the past year is how many elderly, not-so-healthy people acquire standard sized doodles. It would be a lot easier for them to manage one of the toy breeds, and a lot easier to find a friend or relative who could take the dog if the owner becomes ill, etc.
It goes back again to people making an informed decision about what kind of dog to get BEFORE they get the dog. And friends or relatives not giving dogs as gifts!
OK, OK duly noted. I'll get off of my soap box. I'm just thankful that you brought poor Sophie and her plight to our attention here at DK. Each time I check in to make sure Soph is still front and center I am overwhelmed by the positive response and generosity of our fellow DK'ers.
Paula, I LOVE soapboxes...I have been known to hop onto quite a few myself, LOL! And this is one of mine, too. Linda from Second Chance had told me that some of the info about where Sophie came from was wrong, so I wanted to make sure we had it correctly. Stay on your soapbox!
I just did it - just a little but something. Very easy. Just take the time to do it. With all the members on here if we all give a little we can save Sophie's sight. She's adorable.
