I'm looking for allergy information for springer x poodle.  My daughter is sensitive to some dogs and I want to try to get as much information about allergies as possible. It seems as though the dogs she has issues with shed.  Any input would be fantastic.  Thanks!

Has your daughter been tested for specific allergies?   This issue, people wanting Poodle mix dogs, is a  huge problem and there are NO guarantees any dog will not cause a reaction to those with allergies.  Most of our dogs DO SHED.  At least somewhat. Even my F1b leaves curls of fur on the chair.   A marketing gimmick about the non-shedding is just that~ a marketing gimmick.  Too often, these dogs are dumped when one tuft of hair is found on a chair.  Really!

More often, people get the dog, become attached, establish a relationship, only to re-home or worse send it to a shelter to be destroyed.  Not only is the family upset, the dog has lost the only home it has ever known.   Dogs mourn.  Dogs who loose their homes suffer a terrible loss.  The biggest problem we see with Poodle Mixes is the loss of their home to allergy sufferers.  It is a true heart ache.

Here are some links that are about Doodles that you must read.  If, after that, you have questions, we would be glad to help.

Things to Consider Before You Get a Doodle

Also, I don't know of anyone who breeds this mix of dog.  Please read this next short article in what to look for in a breeder.

What to Look For in a Breeder  Great guideline for choosing an honest, responsible, and reputable breeder.

p.s.  I don't have allergies.... not that I know of to dogs. But my dog hoards the earth in that fluff of a coat. When I shave him, my eyes water, my face itches, and I scratch myself senseless.

You may want to look into dogs who are known to have less reactions to allergy suffers.  There are many.  Doodles just are not.  Look at the Standard Poodles, The Wheaten Terrier, Spanish Water Dog, etc

Thank you for your reply.  I greatly appreciate your insight.  I really want to make a good decision and so I am trying to gather as much information as possible.  I reviewed the articles you posted and they certainly have some fantastic points!!  Thanks again!

You are very welcome.  We are so very happy when people invest time and research before choosing a dog.  Please be aware of the Allergy Friendly, Hyper Vigor, Marketing. Find a real breeder and talk with them in depth.

I did look at several of the breeders advertising Springerdoodles.  I am very concerned.  One site, has no location and wants you to just, " Mail Order" a dog.  This, is a PUPPY MILL.

I am finding no reputable breeder ( yet ) who is breeding a quality standard, healthy dog.  I'm concerned so far

"the more hypoallergenic the dog becomes" -- Poodles do not shed their hair/coat/fur (whatever you want to call it). So because less hair falls out and floats around the house, less dander is falling and floating around the house. People are usually allergic to the dander. Some are also allergic to the protein in saliva (so shed or no shed, this would still be an issue for any breed). I had a coworker who would break out in hives if a dog licked her...even petting a poodle. So it all depends on your/your family's allergies. Another thing to keep in mind is that doodle hair is like velcro so if you have pollen allergies and allergies to things outdoors, your dog can drag things in on its fur. Just some things to keep in mind regarding allergies and dogs.

Another thing to ask yourself is this: if you're willing to get really close to poodle, why not go all the way and get a standard poodle and be assured of the non-shedding part? You don't have to clip their hair to look like a show poodle. Standard poodles in puppy haircuts look a lot like doodles.

Just remember Karen S that while poodles are 100% non-shedding (as far as is possible...of course no animal's hair will never ever break off), if the other breed in the mix is a shedding dog, then there is always the possibility of shedding.  Since you have at least one child you know that children are not born a 50/50 split in every possible feature.  She might have your eyes or her father's eyes..or your hair or her father's hair...your nose or her father's nose.  With each characteristic and feature, a child or puppy might get that feature from the father or mother--or else all kids would be identically a 50/50 split in all ways between their parents.  Just something to keep in mind.  A springerdoodle might shed as easily as it might not shed.  You just can't know and when allergies come into play, it is often not a risk worth taking.

I understand.  Thank you for your response.  :)

I am finding no reputable breeder

I hope you can elaborate on this.  I thought I had come across some that looked ok.  I'm concerned I'm missing something.  They breed only 1 or 2 types of dogs, give health screenings, do health guarantees, have addresses...I have done research on what to look for in a breeder....

Maybe you can post the name of the breeder here and we can send you a private message with our thoughts.  You'll have to accept a 'friend' request for anyone (besides me) to private message you.

Is there a place on this site that lists reputable breeders?

We have a group where owners recommend their doodle breeder and answer quick questions about the breeder--but it is not an official DK list, only an Owner Recommended Breeders list.  There are no springerdoodle breeders listed as this is a goldendoodle and labradoodle site first and foremost so we don't have more than a handful (if that) owners of springerdoodles here.

But really feel free to post the name of the breeder(s) you are considering and we'll give you private feedback =)

Karen, what is it about this particular mix that attracts you?

From what I understand, Springers are very, very high energy dogs who are subject to nervousness and separation anxiety. A lot of the popularity of the Goldendoodles and the Labradoodles is the calmer, steady Retriever personality. I am wondering what the reasons would be for mixing Poodles with Springer Spaniels, from a temperament point of view. .

Have you considered a well-bred Standard Poodle? Then you would have a guarantee of non-shedding.
