Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Hi everyone,
I want to breed labradoodles when my chocolate lab is old enough. I will not be over breeding her. I am thinking 1 time every 2 years. I don't plan on having a big breeding kennel or anything like that but I am curious about doodle size preferences. I don't know if I want to breed to a standard poodle or a mini. What size is more preferred? I will be keeping one of the puppies to possibly breed in the future so I don't know what size to go for. Any input would be appreciated.

Hi Tammy,
Has your Lab had genetic testing done? Did you get breeding rights for her when you purchased her? Doodle Kisses supports responsible breeding only, and that requires genetic testing on all dogs before breeding them. Have you ever bred dogs before? Most new doodle breeders are mentored by an experienced doodle breeder.
LOL, I don't mind a bit. :)
Here's what happened the last time a new member asked about breeding his pet dog. You won't see his answers to our questions because he left the website the same day. http://www.doodlekisses.com/forum/topics/trying-to-breed-my-beautif...

It is exciting to know that you love the breed so much to consider taking on this adventure. Many here feel very strongly about this subject as you can tell. I personally like the standards myself. Hoping someone can help you make the right decisions for your family. Good luck in whatever you do.

Hi Tammy, your question is a loaded one that does need serious thinking, honest responses, and the first thing that comes to my mind is "Why?"
Just because you love your chocolate lab does not mean that you should be a breeder. There is so much to consider. First of all, get all the testing done to see if she is a good breeding possibility. Then you need to look at her linage and the linage of the poodles you plan to breed her with. Many, many things to consider other than size. Start researching breeding procedures and I hope you decide against it.
We have a member here who is doing a one time breeding of her labradoodle. She used to breed and show another breed. This person bought the breeding rights when she purchased her pup. She has done all the health testing. She researched what the perfect doodle would be, had a breeder tell her what her dog's 'faults' were and chose the sire because he would counteract her dog's 'faults' and her dog would counteract his. She is not expecting to make any money from this. If you are prepared to do this, then, go for the size dog that makes the best match for yours.
Thank you. You are the first person to put it that way. I appreciate it.
I have every intention of doing all the proper testing on my lab. I have gotten all the rights to breed her. I have a close friend of the family that I was working with on her doodles and she was mentoring me as I helped. The problem is that she moved away and I rarely get to see or speak to her. I am okay with any size, that is why I asked about what was more desirable. I don't plan on keeping a male puppy, just a female. So, I fully intend on having genetic diversity. I want to do this because I LOVE dogs and I LOVE doodles. I know a lot of people don't like it when people talk about breeding. I truly just love dogs.
