Standard Poodle with ear problems....helping out an anonymous Craigslister

While perusing the craigslist ads (As I do when I'm bored), I found this plea for help:

I figured I could post it here and send her the link if anyone had any suggestions on how to help.    So, THIS IS NOT ME, just trying to help someone out.

"It is with a heavy heart that I place this post. I have decided to try to find a good home for my black Standard Poodle.

Jack is about 4 years old, not neutered, and is current on his rabies
shot. I did not buy his papers, because we just wanted him for a pet.
He is perfectly housebroken, although he is not above checking out the
trash can for something interesting, and counter surfing is like an
Olympic sport for him. He loves to go for car rides, and will sit up
regally, and never budge. He is shy, but warms up. He ignores kids,
loves other dogs, and chases cats that won't stand up to him. (We have
one that he torments, and one that he wouldn't dare mess with.) He is
gentle natured, and is happy to spend his day lounging on the couch.
He's a total couch potato.

So why are we parting with Jack? His ears. We have fought his ears for
2 years now--the whole time we have had him. We have tried everything.
We have had him to two different vets. We have had him on antibiotics,
swimmer's ear medicine, peroxide treatments, vinegar solutions, ear
mite medicine--everything we could think of, read about, or had
suggested. We have changed his dog food, at the recommendation of
several people who posted here in response to my request for advice
about 2 months ago. We were hoping it was something as simple as a food
allergy, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Most recently, I have been taking him to the groomer each week to have
his ears professionally cleaned and medicated. By the time I take him
the next week, his ears are full of blood again. She thinks it might be
genetic, or that he might need some very expensive testing done to find
out the root of the problem. We are at the end. We've had some life
changing events in our family in the last couple of months, and this is
more than I can do.

His ears smell horrible. He whines if you bump his ears. He is in pain. We are to the point that Jack has had enough. We are unable to
cure this problem, so I wish to either find someone who is
knowledgeable about ear problems in poodles and can help him, or I am
going to have him put to sleep so he is no longer suffering with this.
I tried unsuccessfully to contact his breeder shortly after we got him,
but she will not return emails. The groomer believes the breeder is
avoiding us, thinking that we want our money back because she didn't
disclose his ear problems. I don't know. I just know that this has gone
on long enough.

I am not trying to make money off Jack. I just want him to go to a
great home with someone who is more capable of giving him the care he
needs. He really is a great dog. I will not let him go to just anyone.
I am hesitant to give him away for free, because I don't want someone
to just take him without thinking things through, and not giving him
the care that he needs. For this reason, I am requiring a donation to
the Humane Society, the zoo, or other animal charity of your choice, in
a check form, that I will mail in to be sure it is carried through.

Here's why Krista ends up with all the heartworm positive dogs down south there. And she just got another one!

Wow! It makes you wonder what creates some of the little hot spots, one looks just about where I live. And look at those expanses where ther is almost no incidence of heartworm.
The map says something about there may be cases that are unreported in some areas due to lack of veterinary care? I looked at it on the website earlier this week...

I live in Oregon, and felt that I should have Cooper on something, but after talking to the vet, he said it really isn't necessary and that there was no need to expose Cooper to a drug he doesn't need, unless we travel to an area that has a high incidence rate. However, with dogs being adopted after hurricane Katrina all over the US, they expect the incidence rate to increase. I sometimes wonder if I should just get it for Cooper?
Why do dogs WITH heartworm increase the incidence? Is it because they spread it? And if so...do they still need the right temps for mosquitoes to make it through the whole heartworm stages?
I thought you needed certain species of mosquitoes and they are absent in some areas. So if that's true, just having infected dogs around wouldn't change things.
Here is an interesting Q and A from the American Heartworm Society. Apparently they are recommending heartworm prevention everywhere.
http://www.heartwormsociety.org/pet-owner-resources/faqs.html#q18
I didn't know it was only passed by a certain type of mosquito. I thought that the more infected animals there are in an area, the more chance there is that any mosquito could pass it from dog to dog.
I'm not sure if it's only certain species of mosquitoes but that's what the reference from petsdoc, above, said. I'd rely more on the heartworm society aand they say something vague that supports this.
Walla Walla is in one of the white spots....no incidence here so far. Unless there is a major climate change we are safe. It has to do with the ambient temperature required to allow mosquitoes to live long enough for heartworm to get through the right stages to infect.
This is truly a heartbreaking situation for everyone involved. Karen, does the owner really want to surrender the dog? Also, is there a Poodle Rescue with similar support and resources to DRC? It sounds like this owner is totally uneducated in how to care for this dog and her life situation is such that it probably is not on top of her priority list right now. But I am getting the sense that she does love him.
I think in her heart she hopes that if she could get him to a good vet, his ears could be treated and he could stay at home. She doesn't want to give him up. She really wants to do what's best for him, and she really does think he might be happier just going to sleep than being sent off to a strange place with strange people, especially if he's going to have to go through stressful and painful medical procedures at the same time. And she may be right.
Her husband took care of the dog to the extent of buying his food; she wasn't sure what he had been eating. Her husband was cleaning the ears until he was deployed; now the groomer is doing it because, well, she just feels overwhelmed. Even if it is a simple matter of clearing up a bad infection, (which I'm sure it isn't; there has to be serious damage if the ears are filling with blood weekly), I think it's unrealistic that she will be able to keep up with even regular maintenance & proper care for him. And this is before the fourth baby comes.
Karen, I have not heard from her yet, I had already sent her my phone number, so maybe I will here from her during normal-people time (not nightshifters like me!). I have a great vet (Skaer veterinary clinic) here in Wichita and I would be glad to pick him and the owner up and bring them in. It sounds like she is about 45 minutes away from here. I'm not really in the position to pay for it though. I can talk to them and they might be willing to donate some time, but I would have to ask. Their clinic already donates hours and supplies to the local lab rescue. I don't know if they do the full immunology testing that your vet does though. Skaer is probably the most expensive vet in town, so I'm not sure if she is planning on keeping him how she would pay for a visit, treatments, or even regular maintenance. Just something to think about. It sounds like you learned a lot about her and I truly hate to think that putting him to sleep is the best option; but sometimes it can be. What would you like me to say to her when I talk with her?
