stepped in paint

Sherlock stepped in some type of paint today on the street. I'm not sure what type it was, but it kind of smells oil-based. I clipped off the hair but there is still some left on the pad of his paw. Any ideas how to get this off? Luckily he hasn't been licking it, but I contemplated putting a boot or sock on his foot so he couldn't get to it. Thanks!
