Hey all - Just wondering if anyone has any tips on getting rid of a puppys stinky breath? We were just at the vet, he is healthy with no infections so that is not the cause of his bad breath but he seems to have it anyways.
I was looking at the mints and stuff they carry at the pet store, has anyone treid any of these? I was afraid they might be too strong for a young puppy. The few puppy themed chew treats i did see were very hard and Harry doesnt like them because he still has his baby teeth, and he prefers treats that are on the softer side and easier to chew.
Just figured i would see if anyone has tried any certain brands or reccomends anything?
Its not intolerable so if i cant find anything i will just deal with it.
Max, my mini LD, is 5 months old and has bad teething beath caused by the food getting stuck between his baby and adult teeth. Think the smell one would have if they never flossed. I've tried different chews, enzyme toothpaste and breath spray. The toothpaste has worked the best. The chews are for tarter which isn't his problem and the breath spray has xylitol in it which is toxic to dogs. Yes, it is a small amount that "they" deem safe but, you may not want to take that chance. So, read the labels. They also sell an enzyme you can place in water that is tasteless. I haven't tried it yet. Oh - I also saw something you can add to food. It's a powder or granular form and my local pet store said it gets great reviews. I didn't try it because Max is super picky with his food.

PS - I was born and raised in Yonkers! :)
I brush Abby's teeth every Sunday (if I dont ritualize I wont do it - lol so it Sunday after supper). I also used dental wipes that you can buy at walmart, you just put the wipe on your finger and wipe their teeth and gums. Breathbuster biscuits are good - they are just in any store more or less - they have chammomile and eucalyptus in them.(I think)
A friend of mine tried all those mints/things, but nothing worked on her (full grown) dogs. At my Vet's recommendation, I started brushing Jennings' teeth when he was about 4 months old, and he LOVES it. I use poultry-flavored toothpaste, and he wiggles and sits right down when I say it's brushing time. Many people have commented on how white his teeth are, and I think his breath is OK!
I found that chew treats with eucalyptus work wonders for Cali's breath. We brush her teeth and she loves the flavored toothpaste, sometimes it is hard to convince her she can't eat the toothbrush. We also learned very early on no liver flavored treats before bedtime. Nothing like a dog in your bed breathing on you with liver scented breath..... ewwww!!
