I just don't get it. How stupid can people be? Frankly, I think they should just remove themselves from the gene pool now.
Anyone with a modicum of intelligence would know that leaving a dog, any dog, in a car in warm, hot weather is a death sentence for that animal. My heart just breaks for this poor dog who had the miserable misfortune to be with these people.

that option isn't good for the environment, and sure isn't good if someone decides they want to steal a running car.
I have tried to leave the a/c on for the dogs but the car automically shuts off, so it doesn't work in my car at all. Anyway, take the dog home! Or get your food to go! I can't imagine a dog liking being left in the car for such a long time.
I agree. Jack hates being left alone in the car and I never do it, regardless of the weather.
I leave my dogs for run in errands and although they always prefer to come with me they're OK with it. But our season for that is really over since I wouldn't leave them with the AC running and it's too hot. I would never leave them for more than a few minutes though. Never for lunch.
IMO The doors should be locked, you should have full view of the car and it should only be in the case of a couple (2-3) minutes.
Having a lunch is a little nuts while your car is running however, I agree about taking your food to go.
I stopped and Panera Bread yesterday to run in for a quick loaf. I left the car running and parked right next to the store so I could see doodlebug looking out at me, just take the remote...I thought this could possibly happen to me as well. Like the couple you encountered I would have been understanding.
Pshaw on the environment comment, it would be doing the same thing running driving down the road, it was only a 2 minute stop in my case.
I did have to contemplate the entire situation all the way home from work (the stop was on the way) and had a conversation with myself...do I drive all the way home, drop Daisy and waste the gas to go all the way back, if it's busy I will keep going, if there is no close parking, I will keep going. All the pieces must fall in place. I am sure I looked like I was nuts looking out the door and placing my order.
As long as the temperature is between 50 and 75 degrees, I often take the boys with me on errands. I crack the windows and open the sunroof all the way so they are getting plenty of air, and I always try to park in the shade. They don't seem to mind when I run into stores briefly, and Murph will usually lie down in the back seat and nap. Guinness watches for me to come back. I would not do this if I was going to a mall or any place where I couldn't park right in front of the store I was going to be shopping in. All I have to do is say the words "road trip" and they are waiting at the garage door.
My two love "going on an adventure". But one thing I do worry about if I can't see them full time is someone teasing them if the windows are open or throwing a lit cigarette in the car. Paranoid I know but it has occurred to me. So I too try to park where I can see them but it's not always possible but I do just run in and out, mostly to little stores.
I have Car start remote. I was getting Pizza the other day and the line was ridiculous. I just kept restarting the car. The doors stay locked. He was in my sight but I was a nervous wreck.
