Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Hello all! It has been awhile since we have posted. It seems we are starting to have a major problem on our hands. Yeti (almost 3 years old) has recently started to become pretty aggressive. He has always guarded things of value (bully sticks and chews ect) so we simply stopped giving them to him. Every once in a while he would snag a sock or underwear and try to guard that. It was always easily managed by not giving him things of high value and by keeping things out of his reach. Well recently he has started guarding his food and their kennels. Both Yeti and Phin have always been kennel trained. Since we brought Phin home, we started feeding the both of them in their kennels to keep the food separate while they were on different kibble. I have noticed that Yeti growls, snaps, and tries to put his paw in his dish anytime he thinks someone is going to take his food away. He also tries to run into Phins kennel and not let him in. I am at a complete loss as to why this is suddenly happening. We did recently move (we have been in the new house for about a month). Our new yard does not have a fenced in back yard so he doesn't get to run around as much as he used to. I have also started working a second job so I am not home as much as he is used to. Is it possible that he is sick and thats what making him so upset? He literally will go from loving on you (resting his head on your shoulder giving you 10000 kisses to when you go to pet him he deep growls and runs into his kennel). He has been in Phins kennel growling any time someone walks by for about 2 hours. He has come out when I asked if they wanted to go potty but ran right back in, and again when he realized Phin was done eating his kibble and wanted to see if there was any left over. Again he ran right back inside when realizing there was nothing.
Please please please any suggestions, advice, anything is appreciated. I am desperate.

Well, less exercise plus less time with you plus a move could certainly cause behavioral changes. I think we have talked in the past about Yeti's tendency to resource guard and the Nothing In Life Is Free training philosophy. I think those things would still apply. I would also try to make an effort to give him more exercise somehow.
Here is the discussion I was thinking about, from back in June 2017.

I think it might help if you read through it. The current behavior may not really be so unexpected when looked at as a continuation of tendencies that were going on back then.
Perhaps his training has slipped a bit or become inconsistent with the move and your second job; if so, time to get back to it, full throttle. :)
What Karen advised: ditto. But I would also get a physical from his vet including bloodwork. If he isn't feeling well, it could be adding to his unwanted behaviors.
