Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hey everyone! Bob is now a big ol' 8 month, 60 lb. doodle and we are experiencing challenges with the x-pen.

We have it set up in an empty corner of the kitchen and we like to keep him here while we are at work, as it allows him more room to move around. The problem is that he now pushes the x-pen wherever he wants to go. He has destroyed two entry rugs by pushing the crate over to them. He has also blocked the back door a few times and I had to go around the the front door to enter the home.

So my question is, have any of you had this issue before? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to "anchor" this thing so he doesn't move it all around?

Here is the pen we have for reference:

LOL...sorry for laughing, but I have this vision of him pushing the pen around to get from point A to point B. I'm surprised he doesn't go over it!
No suggestions, other maybe use those huge plastic ties to anchor it to something.
We use a crate for Enzo...I KNOW she'd bound over the top in no time!

no suggestions, but I will add that I never tried one since I have seen Quincy jump right over a four foot fence from a standing position...I figured an x-pen would never work so we use this huge crate to keep him in when we are not home.

BoB is a cutie!  too funny that he has made the x-pen portable!  good luck!

Haha, it is a little funny... We always tell him that no one likes a drifter! :)

Doodles are so smart!  Have you tried leaving him out to roam the house?  Maybe with some doors closed off?  Baby gates won't work - He will figure out how to leap over them.  I adopted Bodi at age 2, so I'm not sure if he should be wandering the house alone at 8 months.  I do know he is a cutie!!

Screw a couple of hooks into the wall and zip tie it to the wall. Be prepared... A highly motivated doodle can find another way.

My indoor pen is something similar to what you have. But made of metal. It gave me separate strips that you can mount on the wall to connect the pen to the wall if you want to stretch it and use it as divider rather than the octagon shaped pen.

I wonder plastic zip tie from home depot or something may work...? If you have something to anchor to..?

I love the name Bob for a dog and he's so cute!

Riley was jumping the pen within weeks so we bought a HUGE crate that she stays in when we are gone. Lots of room to stand/turn around and stretches way out to sleep. It's so big it's like she has a wing to sleep in and a wing for her toys/water. :) We bought the Kong crate with "garage" doors that slide up on top. I think she was figuring out how to work the latches on her little crate so I feel better knowing she can't lift these. Also nice because we don't have doors swinging open in the walkway.

Bob doesn't jump it. He jumped up once, puting his front paws on it, and it toppled over, scaring the bajesus out of him. He's also afraid to go down our stairs, but that's another topic entirely.

I think I'll probably try putting a hook or two into a stud and try zip typing it. I would LOVE to let him have free reign of the house while we are away, but unfortunately, Bob isn't very trustworthy yet! :)

We have one of these, also have two of the metal ones and while they push parts, nobody ever pushed the whole thing around.  How about a nice sturdy chair to anchor it to? Or the crate set on outside?   The pen in our kitchen just blocks off one end from the dining/living room, I swing open one ends to use a door.... other door I took  the plastic pen (above) apart and use it as folding dividers - it works.

Find a bos of something heavy, anchor it to the wall,  or keep him crated until supervision is possible and correct the daylights out of him.  Our older girl still pushes her way through the easy parts, and our little guy was getting clever at escape routes - but I go him penned in pretty good.

I do like the height on these pens that you have and they are so lightweight.  Time and patience are the only answer.

We had something similar for my oldest son (which has now been recalled) and he pushed it around the entire room!  Not what you want to hear.  My suggestion - zip tie the pen to something heavier? Or  set a space off that you can contain him in  when you are gone - a room or part of a room.  Our Springer, even after CCL surgery, could climb out of an ex-pen.  We finally blocked off a room with a hutch in front of an open doorway (it had a second doored entrance).  When left alone and escaping confinement, our Springer ate the edges of all of our rugs and carpets, 3 couches, wall molding, and more stuff before outgrowing this destructiveness.
