The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network
Walk for Food Allergy: Moving Toward A Cure™

I will be participating in the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network's (FAAN's) Walk for Food Allergy: Moving Toward A Cure. The event will be held on December 5, 2009, at Lake Anna Park in Barberton at 1:00PM. If you are not in the area or are unable to walk you can join my "VIRTUAL Walker Team" and your efforts are as much appreciated. The FAAN Walk for Food Allergy is designed to raise funds to find a cure for food allergy and to educate others on the seriousness of food allergies.

Please support my fundraising efforts with a donation or joining my team of walkers at Lake Anna or by being a"Virtual" walker. Your tax-deductible donation will make a difference in the lives of many! It is faster and easier than ever to support this great cause; you can make your online donation by simply clicking on the link at the bottom of this message. If you prefer, you can send your tax-deductible contribution to me (make check payable to FAAN), and I will send it in.

Any amount, large or small, helps FAAN continue Moving Toward A Cure! I greatly appreciate your support and will keep you posted on my progress.

Food Allergies: Did You Know?

• Food allergy results from an immune system response to a food protein that the body mistakenly believes is harmful.
• Symptoms can include rashes (such as hives and flaring of eczema), gut symptoms (such as pain, vomiting), breathing symptoms (such as trouble breathing, throat tightness/closing, wheezing, coughing, etc.) and poor blood circulation (passing out, paleness, confusion). Sometimes food allergy causes chronic skin or gut symptoms.
• Food-allergic reactions vary from mild to severe and can be life-threatening or fatal.
• Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction that is rapid in onset and may cause death.
• More than 12 million Americans are estimated to have food allergies. That's one in 25, or 4% of the population. An estimated 3 million children in the U.S. have food allergies.
• The incidence of food allergy appears to have increased among children by 18% from 1997 to 2007.
• Eight foods account for 90% percent of all food-allergic reactions in the U.S.: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts (e.g., walnuts, almonds, cashews, pecans, etc.), wheat, soy, fish, and shellfish. However, virtually any food can cause an allergic reaction.
• People with food allergy must carefully avoid eating the problem food by reading ingredient labels, asking questions and discussing food preparation in restaurants, and working with others to make sure their "safe" food has not come in contact with their allergen during food preparation or service.
• For some sensitive people with food allergies, even a trace amount of a food allergen can cause a reaction. Most individuals who have had a reaction ate a food that they thought was safe.
• There is no known cure for food allergy; strict avoidance of the food allergen is the only way to prevent a reaction.
• If a severe allergic reaction happens, prompt treatment with an injection of adrenaline (epinephrine) is required. People with severe food allergies should carry this medication at all times.
• A person having an allergic reaction should seek prompt medical attention, for example by calling 911.
• If you think you have a food allergy, talk to your doctor.

Are we permitted to bring pets? I won't bring Peanuts, if my dog can walk.
If I can bring my Doodle, I would be glad to walk around Lake Anna.
