Sydney....after being told we could loose Sydney we hope she may be coming around!

Our Vet made us aware several weeks ago that we could loose Sydney after we left her at the Vet several times early in April.  We were led to believe after our first visit to the Vet that Syndey's illness was due to bully sticks we gave her two days before she became very ill.  However, after weeks of serious side effects and lots of research and emails with others on DK, we think Sydney's illness may have been triggered by over vaccination several days before she became so ill.  Sydney was given the DHPP and Rabies (too soon) vaccination at the same time.  The Vet would not disagree that they over vaccinated Sydney but the Vet would not admit to the problem was caused by the vaccinations.  Sydney is still on several medications and is being taken off of one med at a time.  Sydney seems to be feeling a little better and just started barking a bit and playing with her toys a bit this past weekend.  It has been over a month since she was hospitalized.  We still are not sure what caused Sydney to become so ill but we are still hoping that Sydney will be back to our old Sydney!  Thank you for all of your notes and concerns about Sydney!  We love her LOTS and it has broken our hearts to see her suffer so much!

I'm so happy to hear that Sydney is doing better! JD and I are keeping fingers and paws crossed that she gets better and better every day and is soon her old, happy self!

Glad Sydney seems to be slowly feeling better and I hope she continues to improve every day.
This is really good news.  We will continue sent positive thoughts and energy her way.
Wonderful news...continued wishes for an 'all better' Sydney!
This is very good news...I hope she has turned the corner and will be back to being your wonderful girl again soon.
When Quincy had his vaccinations, we always had to go back 2 weeks after for his rabies shot.  So glad to hear the Sydney is doing better, hope she continues on this path until she is back to her old self.
For those of you who were questioning about the shots and the Vet who gave Sydney the vaccinations.......Sydney has been to this Vet since she was a puppy.  The Admin staff print out the shot schedules for the Vet and we were given a copy with the bill.  After we got home and looked at the report, Sydney was not due for a rabies shot according to their records but was given a rabies shot along with the DHPP (which we understand is 4 vaccines) during the same visit.  We immediately called and questioned about the rabies shot and the admin girl said "no problem, some towns require a rabies shot every year".  After bringing Sydney to our Vet's office 5 days with overnight IV, we brought Sydney to a specialist who did not want to blame our Vet but asked us when we had her vaccinated.  Sydney was to 5 Doctors since she became ill and no one gave us any answers.  I doubt we will ever have Sydney vaccinated again.  We understand there are holistic Vets who can handle the issue of a rabies shot.

When I got Murphy we had to sign a contract with his breeder agreeing to all sorts of things one of which was that we would never give Murphy his rabies vaccination within two weeks of any other vaccine. She also includes in her doodle handbook that she sends home with each puppy a section on the dangers of overvaccinating.  I had no idea it could make a dog sick and even cause death until I googled it after reading this part of her contract.  Thank goodness she is such a wonderful breeder.  My vet's office does however try to get me to do all my vaccines at one time but when I tell them no they never disagree with me.

I am so sorry this has happened to Sydney and to you.  You are in my thoughts and Murphy sends great big kisses.

I'M GLAD Sydney is feeling better-our vet doesn't ever admit they are wrong either-twice now we have had bad shot experiences but they don't take the blame. I hope she has a full recovery.
Oh NO!  I didn't realize sydney was still so sick!  I remember the older post... I am such a worry wart about shots and preventatives... I know mosquitoes season is upon us, but I worry about even the pills... Tori has gotten sick just from those... I heard giving Ivermectin to aussie breeds is not good.... One time Tori received a shot - I believe it was the 3 year rabies shot and by the time we came home - maybe 20 minutes later, her eyes were swollen and she threw up...we had to bring her back for a shot of benedryl (more $ and worry!) I think I will pay for the titers first before vaccinating too.  HUGS and PRAYERS to all of you!

Blood tests that check the levels of immunity for the various diseases for which you vaccinate. They are more expensive than just giving the shots, which is probably why few people titer; but the vets offices are also not always forthcoming about the options.

There are also now three year versions of the DHP shots, as well as three year rabies shots.

This is not something you can consider doing anyway, though, until Hattie has completed all her puppy shots.

I first titered when Jackdoodle was 3 years old, and his specialist recommended that instead of automatically vaccinating.

I'm glad to know for the future too. I had no idea. Gail, I'm so sorry you are going through this. We will pray for a full recovery.
