Teaching our doodle tricks!

Thanks to our wonderful trainer Sue and our determination our Lola at 11 weeks is displaying almost of her manners. We're working on stay and lay still but we know it's hard for such a high-energy, stubborn, intelligent girl. LOL

We want to move onto the next chapter and teach her some cool tricks. MY 5 year old daughter brought it up as she wants to be a dog trainer when she grows up. The breed is so unbelievably intelligent that we know it'll be a cinch. Problem is we don't know how to initiate "tricks." I've seen it done so know it's possible. Can anyone tell us if your doodle knows any tricks, how you went about teaching them and what methods of positive reinforcement worked best?

I'd also love to share some helpful hints we received yesterday from the wonderful Sue for any other doodle puppy owners out here. They can be handful and it's such a relief to know just how to handle it.

And announcement!!!! For the first time EVER I was able to walk Lola and our Vida together! I feel such a huge sense of accomplishment...not to mention I wont be conducting 6 seperate walks a day with 4 kids tagging along!

For such a young puppy I would use clicker training to teach tricks, check out the Kikopup videos on Youtube and watch them over and over...it's all about timing and watching for cues.

Here's a discussion that Joanne (and Spud) shared a while ago that might be helpful.  I joined this group, but haven't done a whole lot of trick training because I've been focused right now on some behavior issues with my younger Dood.  There are some great videos on this Dog Trick Training site that you may find helpful....and fun.  You might also want to join the Training Group here on Doodle Kisses....we'd love it if you could share some tips with us as you start your trick training.

Yes, this is an excellent video and she obviously knows what she is doing.  My dog heard her and jumped up on the desk to watch the video and whined at her commands.  Not that he can do them, but he was definitely listening.

I have taught Tara a few tricks. She knows high five, left paw, right paw, roll over, dance and play dead. Plus she knows to run and jump into your arms (she is a mini, don't try this with a 60 pounder! LOL)  I have been using the book 101 Dog Tricks and it is easy to follow.  It has tricks for large and small dogs and is very simple and easy to follow. The book breaks the training down into steps and has LOTS of pictures. I use treats and don't use a clicker but I use a marker word (good) so she knows when she has achieved the desired result and then I give her a treat. I find the clicker kind of cumbersome to work with but some people really like them. Here is a link to the book:
