Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Well, Yogi is now 7 1/2 months old he had been the very best puppy ever. I've wanted to get another doodle since I first thought about him.
DH said go for it this morning. So give me your best reasons I shouldn't do this. I thought I'd like to get one within the next 6 months so they will be near the same age and maybe also a little smaller like 25#'s. His mom and dad have been bred together again and due in another month or so.

Tell me why it's a bad idea ;-)
... Or if you must, why it's a good idea. Thanks!!!!!

Kona was the easiest puppy ever! He has had an "old soul" since the day we brought him home at 8 weeks. He could not bear to be scolded. His heart's desire is to please us and be our best friend. Then we got Owen, his half brother. Owen has been the most challenging dog of our whole lives. He is 3 1/2 and is finally (knock on wood) beginning to follow a few rules around here without constant scolding or consequences being doled out. He has found ways to be destructive and obstinate and just plain naughty that we have never seen in 35 years of dog ownership. So... would I get a second doodle again. ABSOLUTELY! But I would be so much wiser. Getting another dog from the same breeder, even the same parents will not mean you are getting the carbon copy of the easy puppy you have had. If you have children you know how different they are. If you have a sister or brother, you know how different the two of you are. Both of our dogs have a sweet, sweet side but Owen was brought here to teach us all sorts of things... including the fact that Kona is not good because we are such great trainers. hahahaha

Laughing out loud, Bonnie!

As am I!  :)

Bonnie, you are funny.  But honestly this is probably my biggest hesitation.  Yogi has been wonderful, I figure for my next one I'd be due some trouble ;-)  How far apart in age are your doodles?

They are 2 1/2 years apart. Lots of people will tell you the older dog will train the puppy. Kona is quite submissive and did not teach Owen to be well behaved. He just would come up to us with those huge soulful eyes begging for mercy!

We have had two or more dogs for many years. While Kona and Owen are not a great match, our Goldens were inseparable. I think Kona would miss Owen if he were not here, but believe me Owen would be desolate without Kona! The second one seems to often need that first one more than the reverse in our experience.

You won't hear any arguments for me, Leslie, since I'm on my way to a second doodle!  :)  (As yet to be born, but hopefully later this year).  And I figure I'm just asking for it with the next one; Ellie is such a sweet angel...this one will probably be devil dog LOL.

I love this reply Bonnie!!

Leslie Max is about the same age, and I have the same feelings as you, I kind of want another one, I doubt my dh would go for it though. I have seen all the reasons why not on here, like double the work, I think that instead of copying each otherès good behaviour they are probably like kids and copy the bad and so on, but all that extra doodle love too!

Max has the look I like, can you message me?  What breeder did you get him from?

I have two and aside from cost and that sort of thing I love it.

Thanks F.  I probably should at least sit down and calculate the costs before I make the move.  I really haven't worried about that part ;-)  but with retirement looming in the next five years, guess it can't hurt.
