I have 2 LD's and one of each personality. Ginger is laid back, not a care in the world (unless someone comes to the door) and Jack is a crazy, chewer of furniture, happy go lucky, nut job. If you are a squirrel in my backyard, you are there for Jack to chase and , he hopes, to catch one day. Ginger sits, in a chair, the ground is just not good enough for her and watches. She is the little princess around here and Jack is her jester.
Samantha is an F1 LD. - came to live with us at 11 weeks from a pet store (no comments please, I know better now)
She NEVER destroyed or ate a shoe, sock, bra and never 'helped' with the laundry.
Not a barker unless you come to the door; or if you are a squirrel or chipmunck that runs in her yard
She never cried in her crate
She is a great traveler - just check out her blog on her vacation in FL this past winter (oh, she is a fantastic typer)
She is a chewer but has outgrown the shredding toy stage except the occasional old tennis ball.
She IS ball obsessed
I think if you do your homework right you can come up with the perfect angel LD, since we all seem to mold our dogs to the standards we want them to be, and puppy training is just a phase to the super dogs we all have.
No! No ruffling! I really made this observation and it makes me wonder - thats all. And golden retrievers were ranked 4th on the top 10 most intelligent breeds. I am dead serious about a labradoodle in the future thinking if I am going for 2 doodles why not one of each.
Being the mother of a mini GD, I can say she is the best behaved dog I have ever had. But I spent a lot of time training her and I think that makes a big difference too. I am getting another mini GD the end of July and I expect to have a wonderful dog when I get done training her too. I don't think it matters much whether is is a lab or a golden, both are wonderful dogs. You get what you give.
Well, Jack is an LD who was 14 months old when I got him, so I don't know what he was like as a puppy...maybe hell on wheels, lol. But he is the best behaved dog I've ever had, and he has been since he walked in the door. He must have had some training, but most 14 mos. old big dogs are still a handful. He's never once gone in the garbage, taken food off the counter, or destroyed anything...not even his own toys. Indoors, he just hangs out...no zoomies, which I would kind of like to see. He is perfect at the vet and the groomers. He only barks briefly when someone comes to the door, he drops an object immediately when you say "leave it", and I really didn't work very hard with him on these things. I can't give the previous owner much credit either, as he had no idea what "sit' meant, and didn't know how to walk on a leash, not to mention they dumped him in a shelter after a year. Jack was originally from a pet store, so we can't give credit to the breeder or the parents, either. I think he's just naturally a very laid-back, well-behaved LD.
