I had looked into this kennel once for a family get-away. We ended up getting a place that allowed dogs. I can't imagine the heartbreak of these dog owners.

This IS heartbreaking.  I have been very lucky to have one of my grown children stay at the house when we can't take the dogs with us. I don't know what I'd do if this wasn't an option.  We have friends who have used dog sitters with varying results, mostly unhappy with the service as the sitters only pretended to stay at the house for the time paid for.

Now I am stressed because we are boarding our dog next week!  The place has a wonderful reputation but life is always a risk!

I think there should always be someone the kennel 24/7 to keep an eye on things. There are no guarantees. I'm sure your dood will be fine.

So, so sad.  We enjoy traveling and several times a year leave our doodle at a kennel.  Years ago, I researched kennels in our area and visited the one's I thought best and then picked two that met my high standards.   When we drop her off, she seems happy and trots back to the play yard.  I'm sure there's always some risk even if you get a dog sitter for home,  The kennel works for us and I know she is being well cared for.

About 30 years ago when my kids were young we took a 3 week trip to Florida. We boarded our miniature schnauzer that whole time. It was the reputable one in my area at the time. We also groomed him there, so they all knew each other. He loved it there and they seemed to love him. When we picked him they were joking they didn't want to give him back, they had grown too attached to him. But with Annabelle, I had done research the few times we thought about boarding her. We did leave her once for 5 days and she was a basket case. I feel that was more due to her personality than the facility and the way she was treated. The place had great reviews.

How sad.  We had to quit taking ours to a great day care and boarding kennel because no one was going to spend the night on the premises.  At first the family lived in the building...then they built a home, but no where near the kennel.  I just couldn't leave them there anymore thinking about all the times I get up in the night for my girls.  They still enjoy daycare there, but overnight is out of the question.  I take them to a lady's home and it works well.  She's a trainer with dogs of her own.  I've been taking  Skadi, our first dog there since she was little.  Elli who we've had for about 3 years also goes there and they seem to do just fine.  We don't have family or friends in the area that can help us out so we have to go this route.  But, if anyone is offering...we live in Midland Michigan and are always looking for a doggie nanny....LOL...just sayin'.

We have been in Michigan less than 10 years. We don't have anyone either that I would trust with my girl. My daughter who lives out here and the reason we are here, is working on her PhD and is short on time. We have been taking her with us on our road trips. So far it has been working out.
