This spay has been one of the worst experiences ever!!!!

Sorry to clog up the forum, but I am freaking out! 

I can't keep her from jumping on and off of things. I am off work until January 6th so I am home with her all day, but she has been jumping on and off the couch several times a day. I covered the couch in pillows like the vet suggested, but she still gets up there. I try to watch when she is ready to jump on or off of the bed, but sometimes I'm not quick enough. I don't have a pen I can keep her in and she would freak out if I left her in the kennel all day (which also seems cruel when I'm home). 

The second thing is the fear of infection. She licks sometimes and I tell her to stop. I put the cone on her and she stumbles around the house falling over because she can't take a step without catching it on something. After two minutes she figured how to use her paws to get it off. If it were to get infected I would take her to the vet to get it treated and then my PetPlan insurance would be worthless. I just signed up a couple days ago so if she got an infection now, everything from now on would be a "preexisting condition." I just want this next week and a half to be over!

Keep the faith......these doodles have a way of acting like they didn't even have surgery.  Libby flew out of the vet's office after her spay, and bounced out of the vet hospital after having serious surgery when she was about a year old.  Of course we tried to keep her quiet, but Libby's definition of quiet was not the same as ours (or the doctor's)!  Just do your best - she will be fine!

Did she jump on things? The vet said that when they jump there is something that builds up underneath the incision and if that happens it has to be cut out. I cringe every time I see her jump and keep checking the incision.

She didn't jump on stuff too much at that time - she was gated in the kitchen mostly when she was spayed, but she ran around quite a bit.  All you can do is try and keep checking.

Since you dont want the crate, could you just put up a baby gate to keep her area smaller, preferably one without a couch or bed to jump on?

 

I'm sure I'll have the same concerns in a couple months when Yogi gets neutered.  Just think, yours will be a distant memory!

Can you keep her tethered to you while you are home for a few days?

I was also going to suggest this.  Keep her on the leash so that you can really keep an eye on her. 

You could also wrap an old (clean) t-shirt around her midsection to prevent her from being able to lick it.

And as far as getting an infection treated - if that happens - maybe your vet could just call an antibiotic in for you to the local pharmacy.  Most pharmacies fill pet meds as well, and a lot of antibiotics are on the $4 or $5 plan...

I tethered her right before reading this! :) I don't know why I didn't do that sooner. I tried a T shirt yesterday and it just slid down. Maybe a tank top will work better.

Some of us used boy's undies with the tail sticking out through the fly. It might help. I hope this gets much easier tomorrow. sorry for you.

We all use onsies and boys underwear around here if we can get away with it instead of the cone.There are a lot of pictures.  Here is one I found.    

Dont worry too much. I did crate mine at night only just because I could hear when a pup was rattling around in a crate because of the plastic bottom. Then I could hear of they were getting to sutures.  

When a pup would start to lick I just said NO.  Maybe it was too easy for me but I've had 5 spays in five years and one neuter.  All went well.  They are puppies and it is hard to settle them sometimes. 

Gates are a great investment. I still have ours up and use it a lot especially in muddy weather.
