For years I have heard many of you rave about the product, Thornit for dogs ears.

When I do an internet search I find the product with the name Thornit in Europe.  On Amazon, Bizrate, and other sites I am finding this product ~ R-7.  That is all that is offered when I do the search.

Are they the same?  I also see the same yellow container but if you read real close it looks like a different product.

Can any of you give me ideas here on which product you use.  What are the differences in these products?  Is this what you buy or something else?

R-7 Ear Powder 12 GMPOWDER - remove hair

I don't really want to remove hair.  Every time I do, that is when I have the problems even if I touch the ears once, the infections start.  Leave well enough alone.

R-7 Ear CremeCREAM - drying ears

Then there is also a cream.  The cream, with the same bottle color and design does not contain Rosin Grip. That is another question; Is Rosin Grip the main ingredient?  I really don't know about a cream since both of my dogs ears are so moist all the time.

Since I am confused can you help me with these questions?

  • Is this the same product?  Is R-7 the same as Thornit or is this just what comes up in the search?  Is this product sold in the US?
  • If this is what you use, do you buy both products? Or just one?  Which one?
  • Is Rosin Grip the ingredient I am looking for?   The powder has the ingrediant where the cream does not
  • Where do you purchase Thornit if you use it?
  • Why am I getting R~7 and not finding a product named THORNIT?

I have book marked a recipe to make it at home but first I want to try it before I spend all money to make the product myself.

Joanne, here is the website for Thornit

http://www.thornitearpowder.com/

This is where I get it, don't know if that helps.

The rosin grip sounds like it is an ingredient to help pull the ear hair, so that is probably not what you are looking for. I take it you are looking to keep the ears dry and those nasty infections that start in moist ears away.

Thanks for your help.  I saw this site but it looked like it is not in the US so I came here to find out where you purchase the product.  This website says the US is restricted from buying too much of this product

USA Customers only - Please note.

Due to US customs limitations we can only send 1 large (100g) Thornit per order

I thought we could get this in the US but I guess if comes from outside the States.  Thanks all for helping me out.   Why then, do I get R-7 on Amazon if this is NOT the product I want.  Why would they stear me into buying another product.

Oh well.

Correct, you can not get Thornit in US.  Maybe that is why Amazon is steering you to the other product.  I believe Thornit is what you want.   I put it in Murph's  ears once a month and after he swims....only time we have ever had an ear infection was recently when I had stopped using it.  I am back to using it now.
BTW You only use a small amount so you won't need to order more than one at a time.
100g is quite a large amount, you only ned a very small amount at a time.  I have a 20g bottle that I have been using for eight weeks and it's only half empty.

Ordering now   :)   Thanks to all of you if feel like I have the correct product ( for once )  and all of my questions have been answered.

Once I try this, and if I like it, I would really like to try the recipe that was posted in another discussion

Do you use this as a preventive? My Springer is so prone to nasty ear infections. I didn't understand that you sprinkle it around the outside of the ear and massage it into the ear? Huh?

HUH is right?  Dunno Nancy? Here is one link I saved in my bookmarks. Interesting.  There are many more but this one had a recipe to make it yourself.

But ever since I became a member of DK I have read about Thornit.

Yes, I am going to use it as an ear infection preventative.  I am really tired of the vet bills and antibiotics.  Time to try something else.

That is the recipe I've seen. I've also seen that you need an rx. for iodoform powder but that you can have a compounding pharmacy make this up for you. I use Dermapet's Malacetic Otic, ordered on line. I don't pluck any hair.

My vet will NEVER give me an RX for iodoform.  It would take away all my office visits!  LOL
