Apparently these are illegal in his Country. I personally am not a fan of shock collars or electric fences unless the owner really really knows how to use them and train their dog accordingly. Then I think they are fine as long as the dog learns quickly and is not continually shocked as in for training purposes

Do you think that someday they will be illegal to use in the US, do you think the humane society will step in?

Among the best brands with a long history of reliability is TriTronics.  I don't think any of them have more levels than in the teens, but you'd have to check their site to be sure.  100+ levels is really not necessary.  But I wanted  to address the idea that you can just grab an ecollar and have a shortcut to training.  No, you can't.  Even those who train exclusively with an ecollar have to actually put in practice to teach the dog WHAT to do in response to commands.  It's not the case that if you just increase punishment a ton a dog will learn more in obedience.  My guess is that the people  who buy it casually are only thinking about breaking a 'bad' behavior in a dog that doesn't have and won't get (from them) actual obedience training. They think 'Oh we'll just zap him when he jumps and voila he will stop jumping' and then they screw that up and the dog creates a wrong connection at best.
But that's exactly what a lot of people do.

Adina, I agree that is what people are trying to do, is take a shortcut.

I was referring to higher end Dogtra collars which we use for Apollo in the field.  While 100+ levels is not necessary, being able to adjust in slight increments is useful.  TriTronics makes a good collar.  Most people that want instant results are not willing to pay for a good collar either.

I liked the Dogtra collars because of the vibrate only feature. I have to date, being lazy, only used it for getting Luca's attention so that he responds to recall, not to correct unwanted behavior. He hates the vibration and knows exactly what to do to make it stop.
As I have often said before, Luca was trained with an ecollar at one point for recall. He has never been shocked but he responds to this day to the vibrate setting on the rare occasions I use the collar. It is a great tool.

I actually like the idea of a vibrating collar for Jack for his recall because on the beach, he just loses his sense of reality and runs and runs to chase the birds.  He would listen if only he remembered too.. a tiny little vibration of a non shock nature would be the same as getting a bottle of water sprayed in his face, at least equal to me,

Jack despises the water bottle, I only sprayed him once in his whole life with it, but if he see's it, he cowers, which makes me feel bad for him

agreed
Well how many people especially men (sorry) read ALL the directions on ANYTHING they buy? They are too darned determined to use it and don't use it properly! No tool is good for a dog if it's not used correctly! If a shock collar is needed for training for a short time I'm ok with that in the right hands. They need to have training classes just for these! I wish alcohol was illegal in the US but that's not going to happen so this probably won't either. Both are ok if they are in responsible people's hands.
E-collars will never be outlawed in the US.  They are too valuable a training tool for hunting dogs and any other dogs who need to work off leash and at a distance from their owners.

Maybe if people were required to do what the guy did on this video it might reduce the misuse of the e-collars:

A JackA at it's finest (sorry to use my dogs name in vein) seriously that is why people can not be trusted to do the right thing. or most ppl or some.
Absolutely, Jennifer. If this guys will do this to HIMSELF WTD will he do to some helpless being? Ugh! Hopefully he learned some valuable life lesson from this experience!
