After the initial vaccination we draw titers instead of vaccinating. Titers have always come back with proof that they didn't need vaccinating. Hence reducing my furry friends to the exposure of toxins.
What are your experiences with this. Does your Vet offer Titers as an alternative to vaccines.
Just asking?

Yes, my vet will do titers instead of vaccinations on adult dogs. You do have to ask , though, they don't automatically offer it.
All of the core vaccines also can be given in a three year version rather than every year, which is another option for those who are concerned with over-vaccinating.
I do titers with my Bailey. She is 2.5 years old and has not needed vaccines since she was 6 months old. (with the exception of rabies... by law in my state, must be given each year.)
Now that I think about it...maybe we can do three year rabies in Indiana but I think I remember that for some reason my vet does not like to do the 3 year one. I must ask her again. Is the 3 year dose really the same amount as the one year dose? How is that possible? And if that is true then why on earth would it be necessary to give it each year? I wish we could do titers for rabies in Indiana!
Gail, some vets like to do them annually because it increases income. :( It looks like you can get them every 3 years once you have the one year booster. Here is what the state of Indiana says:
345 IAC 1-5-2 Required rabies vaccination of dogs, cats, and ferrets
Section 2
All dogs, cats, and ferrets three (3) months of age and older must be vaccinated against rabies. The rabies vaccination of a dog, cat, and ferret shall be maintained by ongoing revaccination of the animal as follows:
Ferrets shall be revaccinated within twelve (12) months of the prior vaccination.
Dogs and cats that are vaccinated with a rabies vaccine whose label recommends annual boosters shall be revaccinated within twelve (12) months of the prior vaccination.
Dogs and cats that are vaccinated with a rabies vaccine whose label recommends a booster one (1) year later and triennially thereafter shall be revaccinated within twelve (12) months of the first vaccination and shall be revaccinated within thirty-six (36) months of each vaccination thereafter. The owner of the animal is responsible for procuring the vaccinations required by this section.
Maybe discuss it with your vet and see if you can make a switch.
Thanks Ricki! I will have a discussion with my vet at our next visit.
We do titers for our Chihuahua with kidney disease and also did them for our goldendoodle this year. Chi has not had to have a vaccination (other than 3 year rabies) for 5 years.
Tara is 5 years old and has only had her parvo and distemper puppy shots. Since then we have had her titers tested and they have always been strong. This year she saw a new holistic type vet for a wellness check and he said it was no longer necessary to check titers either because her immunity is holding. She does get rabies shots every 3 years as mandated but the holistic vet also gave her a homeopathic remedy to help offset any adverse effects.
Ricki, what does your vet give to offset any adverse reactions…. ?
Jennifer, he used one dose of Thuja 30C immediately after the vaccination. This can be purchased at many natural food stores or on line. I found this info at Natural Rearing.com too.
"Thuja is the main remedy to give to help detoxify from the side effects of vaccinations. Give one dose immediately after the vaccine is administered. For chronic problems traced to vaccinations, give Thuja once daily for one week; then give Sulphur once daily for the next week. This will aid the body in detoxification."
I have also had vets in the past use Lyssin 30C in the same manner for rabies. Another thing that this vet did that I really appreciated was give Tara a size appropriate dose. Most vets use one size fits all resulting in a Chi getting the same dose as a Great Dane. This has always concerned me and I was surprised and relieved to hear he was downsizing the dose for her.
You know what this sounds like to me Ricki. Here is a little blurb on Thujs:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thuja
"Oil of thuja contains the terpene thujone which has been studied for its GABA receptor antagonistic, with potentially lethal properties"
I thought I'd be hearing from you F. :) It seems that you don't quite understand the nature of homeopathy or you would realize that there is no need to fear lethal danger from a homeopathic dose of Thuja and that in fact the oppose it true. I know we've been down this road before F, how about if we call a truce?
