Wally had a restful night. The vet prescribed Tramadol for pain, which seems to be doing the trick. Usually, this is given in combination with an NSAID, but since Rimadyl caused damage to his liver (His liver recovered (hooray!), which is why the surgery was able to happen yesterday.), she felt it best to stay away from all related drugs and limit his medication to Tramadol. He seems to be without pain, but still very tired.
We have to feed him soft food for two weeks, while his mouth heals. Interestingly, she said to stick with his current food (Acana), but to soak it in chicken stock until it is soft. Also, he cannot play with any toys at all for two weeks, while the extraction site mends and the stitches dissolve. This means that Charlotte be without toys, as well.
Also, the canine dentist removed a very small lump that was under the skin on Wally's chest, while he was under anesthesia. We discovered this several months ago while brushing him. We will get the results of the pathology tests in a week or so. Both our regular vet and the dentist felt that it was benign, but that since it could change over time, so it was best to be proactive and have it removed.
Thanks, again, for all of your thoughtful wishes for Wally's wellbeing. It's so nice to know that we have friends out there in DK cyberspace :o)
Original post: We are leaving soon to bring Wally to the oral surgeon to have his broken molar extracted. While I trust the canine dentist completely, the procedure will most likely take three hours. It is certainly going to be a long day. Right now, though, all Wally is concerned about is the fact that he has not been given breakfast. I haven't told him about the appointment yet. I will try to report back later in the day. In the meantime, please keep him in your thoughts, and keep those antlers (elk, deer, moose) away from your precious doodles' mouths.

Thinking about you both today and sending positive thoughts for a smooth surgery. Hang in there!
Hope all goes well.
Oh good luck to you and Wally....please let us know.
Hoping for a smooth surgery and gentle healing for Wally.
Good luck. Hopefully he's better with oral surgery than I am.
Out of curiosity, how are you supposed to keep the site clean? Is is similar to humans when their wisdom teeth are extracted?
There is nothing special that will be required as to keeping the area clean. The sutures will dissolve, and he will need to eat soft food until the area isn't sensitive. We have not heard from the vet yet.
Good luck today with the surgery, keep us updated.
Laurie, just now reading about Wally. I hope everything went as planned. Please give him a hug from us and let us know how he is!
Thanks, everyone, for your support today. It was a very long day, filled with hours and hours of waiting. We dropped Wally off this morning at 10:30 and picked him up at 5:30. The 3.5 hour surgery was successful, without any surprises. He is home now, resting in his bed with Charlotte right beside him. We are all exhausted and relieved.
I'm so glad he is back home and all went well. Thanks for the update.
Hope you all have a peaceful night. Thanks for the update.
