Two question for all you seasoned doodle owners.

My 13 wo old puppy Quincy (bows were groomers idea- lasted an hour)  Q1-

She loves her antlerz and this dried pumpkin thing on a natural rope. She will chew all day long if I let her. I usually give it about an hour at a time and then put it away and she gulps down water and crashes. How long is safe?  The antlerz piece doesn't even have a dent in it, the pumpkin thingy gets mushy and she can chew off little bits which get all over the carpet and she seems to just adore it. The natural dog food store said to supervise all chew toys, which I do but they never mentioned how long to allow her to "play" with these chew items.

 Q2-

Sticks- they are going to be the death of me!  Even though we have raked and picked up all know offending sticks from our yard, she still manages to find them. She has a talent for finding the very one that will lodge in the roof of her mouth and then she gets all anxious to get it out. Of course I try and keep her away from them, and we are working on the give command with praise and treats - but these stuck sticks scare me and when she whimpers it breaks my heart, I cant remove it fast enough. I bought a rubber stick and thought of just buying more and spreading them about the yard. Does anyone have any suggestions on this?

Thanks in advance for all the help- this site has given me daily guidance and know how in raising my new puppy. I have gotten such great ideas and tips that really work. For everyone who posts you will never know how much it means to new dog owners like myself.

I wish you all a fantastic day!

Great idea- Karen we tried this yesterday, while its a work in progress I think its a step in the right direction.thanks!!

Oh yeah, definitely the chewing stage.  I remember it well.  We are on our third doodle and had two poodles and an Australian shephard before that.  They all were chewers but I remember the doodles best (maybe because they were always in the house or maybe because they were the latest).  Keep everything up and out of the way.  The window sills in our bathroom are lined with shoes (that have not made it back to the closet) and all the counters are cleaned off.  The trash cans in the bathrooms are on top of the toilet and doors closed.  One of my doodles ate (chewed up) a new pair of bifocals and lots of shoes and slippers have landed in the trash.  The latest puppy chewed on the drywall in the laundry room, the bottoms of the cabinets, and the deck.  My husband finally discovered that he would not chew anything with Tabasco sauce on it and he used Tabasco sauce to paint the deck and the bottoms of the cabinets.  Mostly, I would just take anything the dog was chewing away and throw him a chew toy that we wanted him to chew.  Bully sticks are fine for outdoors, but I don't want those smelly things in the house.  If I give the dogs an antler or bully stick, I put the timer on for 20 minutes and when the time is up, they bring the chew to me and I put it in a Ziplock bag and away until the next day. You will find what works for you.  You do know, of course, that chocolate mulch is poisonous to dogs.  Get a list of the things that are poisonous and do a check of your yard.  Grapes (even the vines) and split-leaf philodendrons are two other things that you may want to remove from your lawn at least until the chewing stage is over.

yes we just bought baby proof kit for cabinets- she hangs in the kitchen and so far has not chewed anything of ours yet but I know that day may come and I wanted to be certain she couldn't paw open a cabinet with garbage pail or worse cleaning stuff in it.

Hi, Patty! Quincy looks so cute in those bows!

Q1 : Charlie loves the antlerz, too. We just have them - i think she has 2 or 3 of them - in her basket along with some mallow bones. She is free to get it, chew it whenever she wants... But dried sweet potato rope, etc... i give it to her for awhile and take it off of her. simply because she would chew it util it is all gone....

Q2 : When she is in the yard, i am always with her, and we normally play fetch with 2 toys back to back. I was concerned that she may get splinter in her mouth with those sticks, you know? Especially because Charlie would like to chew them! But once we have toys and able to engage her in play, she seem to leave them alone. She now expect us to play fetch everytime we are out in the back yard, so, she does not pay much attention to looking for the sticks.

I left the antlerz out in her crate and she went for an hour on it -then left it and then went back...funny then she buried it in her pet bed- as if to say don't take it away from me.  Ahh so cute, its a wonder I get anything done all day as I am totally consumed with her cuteness.

I put a rubber twig toy outside and did cheat by adding a bit of Peanut butter to it- and she want for that yesterday and hung on to it - clearly since I did not make her give it back it may have lost its cache, but for 15 minutes it worked. :)

great ideas from all at DK- thanks a million, we are getting there, slowly but surely.
