I know I'm probably looking into this too much. I couldn't help but notice that Toka's hair on his head and front portion of his body is curly, but the back is sort of straight or wavy. Does that mean he will have two different coats? Or is it just puppy hair changing? I thought his hair would be the same all over.
My Sabrina has different coats. Her back is thick and wavy/loose curly and her sides are short and straight, very lab like. Her head is also wavy as is her tail...she sheds like heck, but she is 3/4 lab so I expected that. She is still adorable, as is your Toka! As others have said, as you work your way thru the site you will see that Doodle's come in all colors and coats...but you will also find many that look like yours!!!! I was so surprised that they can be so alike!! Have fun!
Ned is fairly curly except for his tail, however he is really curly behind his ears and on his neck under his chin. Ned is apricot but has lighter parts which are softer and more cottony and this lighter cottony fur mats much worse than his redder fur.
Samantha started life out as smooth as a Lab.
Now she has different coats like Adina's Rosco:
little ringlets on the top of her head
thin, scraggly hair on her legs
her tail is pure lab
her neck is thick, coarse and wavy
her tummy is straight and smooth like a lab
her back has thicker hair and a little wavy
And she doesn't shed a lick!!
I would tell people that her coat is like Sybill - lots of different personalities but unlike Sybill, I love everyone of them. It makes Samantha unique.
Some if it has to do with length/speed of hair growth...just like humans...more length=straighter.
Porter's hair was straighter when it was longer. Also his back-end hair was a little straighter and tanglier, but I chalked it up to constant sitting/friction against rugs--the waves rubbed out and needed to be combed and wetted to come back.
Now he is short as in 1/4-1/2 an inch and he looks like crushed velvet. He is very clean and smells lovely despite our dirt-loving, puddle-sitting lifestyle, but I don't think I will ever go this short again. On a funny note, a couple neighbor kids who were scared of my big hairy black dog lost their fear of him since the haircut and think he looks like a little "black deer" LOL.
We cut Ned this short a couple of months ago and it was a breeze to brush and keep nice, but like you, I prefer to keep it a little longer. We reached major matting length so he is at the groomer today. She said she would "thin" it so it wouldn't mat so much. Whatever, I just hope he looks cute!
