Meg found a wooly worm today (people in our area think you can predict what kind of winter you will have by looking at them, I never got the hang of that.)  Meg thought it was an interesting creature and pawed it around on the porch for a bit.  I thought it was dead, pushed it off the porch and headed for the yard, Meg did a sharp U-turn and grabbed it up with her mouth and ran...it was as if she NEVER heard the leave it command in her life.  I have to confess I am not a bug person and while I can generally hold my hand under her mouth and say drop it, I was not going to have her drop a bug into my hand.  She ate it!  I did not know the fur on them was so harsh and she hacked and coughed for hours and tried to eat all the grass she could.  I finally decided a piece of bread might help push any residual 'wool' down and it helped a lot.  Hope she learned her lesson, wooly worms may be fun toys but they are not good meals.

Can you post a photo of one?

OMD, Meg, what are you thinkin' girl??

Oh, I'm sorry.....but this made me LOL!    Silly Meg!      It brings back memories of when one of my daughters (age about 2) plucked up a dandelion (you know....a fuzzy wuzzy one) and popped it into her mouth as if it were a Tootsie Pop....she was not a happy camper!

Bletch! That would have been a great video!

Oh! I had to google it to know what it was!  Is this correct Judy?

they are so small I can't believe Meg found it after you kicked it off the porch!  I always find these in the grass in my yard but my dogs don't seem interested in them.

That is it...they come in brown, black and stripes of the same.  The amount of black I think determines the harshness of the winter.

Most of ours have an orange/rust stripe mid- back.  We actually have a Wooly Bear Festival here in Ohio, to predict the winters.  Weatherman gather, fireworks, parades, and whatever.  Very popular event in this beautiful town.

NO, I have never attended the celebration. If you would love to travel to Ohio ( warning leave your dogs at home ) It is THIS WEEKEND!

I've seen it spelled with two Ls or one.  Not that spelling matters with my typing.  Here is a brief explanation

This weekend is the weather prediction by looking at the caterpillar.  I'll let you know the report

I want to go to the Woolly (or Wooly) Bear festival! Maybe next year!

Oh Karen, that would be so much fun. I have never had a reason to go, but you and I, and my son's most awesome girlfriend ( you would like her too.  She is sooo intelligent but lovely) will all go.

We have this kind.

Yuck, I'm not fond of these creatures.

They are Woolly Bear Caterpillars, and they turn into Isabella Tiger Moths. I think they are adorable, I've been known to pet them like dogs. :)
